Hi, I live in a new-build home, and the front garden was landscaped by the builder. I am living here since two years now ,but I was not happy with the design — the plants and edging haven’t grown or changed much, and the layout doesn’t really appeal to me.

I’m open to completely clearing the area and starting fresh, but I’m also happy to work with what’s already there if something can be done to improve it. I’m not sure what kind of edging was used, but it hasn't added much to the overall look. My house faces northeast, so it gets morning sunlight.

I’d love some ideas or a design plan to make the front of my house more attractive and welcoming.

The plants haven't thrived because of the poor quality soil builders leave behind allowing weeds to take over. You need to remove the weeds and work in some soil improver. Use a mulch to suppress weeds.

I think it will take more than soil improver to make the plants grow if that is two years of growth. You will find that the soil (what is left of it) will be full of rubble and road stone beneath the surface and will need to be removed and replaced. Also the phrase 'right plant right place' has been ignored here as most of these plants if healthy would out grow massively the space there in, for example, the yellow leaved plant is a Choisya ternata 'Sundance' this will grow up to 2.5m wide and the same in height, although you can keep it down to about 1.5m, but still to big. For those borders you really need plants that will tolerate the shade from lunch onwards or plants suitable for an east facing wall.

Climbers (some clematis), Hostas, Anemones, Euonymous (smaller variety's), Sarcococca etc will be some of the plants more suitable for this side.

i was going to say tapestry or a glass mirrored effect, as well haha. or just a large painting that you will love to look at. your chandelier is very nice, but i've seen many with that kind of entrance, that they have those really long, pendent lighting, for a dramatic effect. but i'm thinking, you don't want to change that. or a giant clock. or one of those wall stickers. or animal heads haha. few ie attached

Hi lots of different options and ideas going on. I had a similar wall and understand how mean it can be to little ones. I bought and put up the expanding wood trellis. This instantly covered the area at a very reasonable price. I then planted quick growing climbing plants. I'm not a great gardener so I cant remember what i had but ask at the garden centre they will advise you. But at least you have a barrier in place to minimize accidents.

I agree re Skimmia, also look at Daphne odora and Sarcococca (both have fantastic scent), Viburnum davidii, Hellebores for early flowers and Astrantia and Geraniums for summer colour. Improve the soil before planting by adding loads of rich compost or rotted horse manure.
