Hi Alison, I like your idea keep it simple, no painting as it does wear after a period of time and looks “tatty”. You are over looked could you put a couple of trees in the bottom bed? The rest of the borders use shrubs with leaves of various shapes and colours that are evergreen so you will have interest through out the year. Look at Euonymus, green and cream, gold and green, and they will grow up the wall giving height. Hebe’s are another good choice some with red foliage, flowers are a bonus. Sissyrinchum, spiky leaves with cream flowers. Pop into a garden centre and ask them, you can lay the pots out and see what appeals to you, but do give everything space to grow. Enjoy it all. Annie

If mowing is an issue then any other type of living ground cover or even shingle rather than artificial grass. I really wish it had stayed uninvented. Perfect choice if you hate nature. Although nice and sunny your garden is overshadowed by the tall building behind. I would opt for lots of bushy fast growing shrubs. Pleached trees would have given you instant privacy.

It all depends on what you want to invest and what you want to use the space for. Is it a retreat, or is it just to look nice from the window?

This could be an amazing little sanctuary to chill and unwind in if you wanted it to be.
