Hill Garden design help! 2 little girls and would like to grow stuff

As the title suggests looking for some advice. There's a small patio area that isn't photographed.

On this hill bit I was thinking of a small swing and a slide installed by our builder into the hillside so it's safe.

Any advice on hillside vegetable planting would be great, the side where the yellow shed is gets all the light. Plan is to move the yellow shed to that small patio area pictured at the moment and functions a bit like a greenhouse.

Our builders had cleared the other side but you can see lots of new plants growing there. Wondering how to get rid of it to allow for planting or clearing for the slide/swing. Weedkiller?

Open to all ideas as we still have out builders finishing bits. Thanks in advance.

Hi there. Is that your house at the top or is that a garden building? Bit confused by the large patio at the bottom ! Really I think you need to create levels in the garden but that would mean moving soil and building retaining walls to create flat levels. Is this within budget? Can your builders get mini digger into the area to do this?

I think i would try to even out the slope by building a level flower bed in front of your new patio with a path behind to access the old patio area/yellow ’green house’. Then a low wall/step to abut the first raised level sleeper bed for growing veg etc.

You could have a seating area in between the second sleeper raised bed. Hopefully this will achieve a near level area

A lawn might be the easiest to maintain with regular treatments for weed control and i would cut back any hedging and overhang on your left boundary

Mary, it has been a while since I read the comments. I think you can take your time with growing with your new decluttered kitchen. It is truly beautiful with just the changes. Don't go spend a ton of money, save it and go on a holiday to a state park or something you have always wanted to do. If your friends that you invite over for dinner don't love ...... well just coming over and visiting,.... then oh well. As long as you are happy, but no need to break the bank..... you did great already. I love it, if you do more, please share though? And to bamamom, I so agree with you! My own, awful, claustrophobic kitchen is LESS than 8 ft x 11 ft... yep that tiny and horrible. I have taken out the nasty, dropped ceiling and have the slightly vaulted original one now, but with pipes showing where the HVAC was put in after and then the repiped ones....... I did not know they plumber would do this, much less the others were there.... gag me. And no money to do it up even decent.

Hi Travis and SoYoung - thanks for mentioning the fireplace.....I was thinking that I would keep it simple with a wood shelf over it and a large piece of Art but I now think it might be a bit lost. Would love some ideas as it needs to work with the built-ins which are slightly domineering. Also, Liam_Boyle - agree re the unbalance. The TV will be staying but I have a lovely coffee table and 2 identical sofas coming so I'm hoping to lay out symmetrically in the room. Will keep 1 of the chairs. Hope this will balance up. Thanks.

Thanks so much for the ideas. I think retaining walls are out of scope. I think raised flower beds sounds good. I was thinking flower bed on the stairs as you come up on the left and the raised flower bed you have on your diagram. I probably can't ask them to do more than that for now but love your plan - might see if I have budget for that in the longer term.

I'm wondering what to tell the builders to do to enable that? Is it with timber?

I was picturing rendered walls near the patio planter and timber retaining wall for the

raised growing bed/retaining wall next to the path, but timber sleepers for both might be quicker ….and cheaper.

In some photos the patio planter doesnt look like it will be too deep so maybe doesnt need a wall?

First thing I would do would be to get a proper survey done of the site so you know what levels you are playing with. It is far to easy to make a mistake on a slope and have a large drop or to steep a lawn when you have finished.

Get everything planned out first so you are happy with the spaces, also make a list of what you require or dream of in your garden.

A sloping garden puts most people off, but it can be a beautiful area if planned right and give years of enjoyment.

Don't just rush into putting up walls, as if this is wrong at this stage it may become a money pit changing things or putting things right.

I would look at investing in a professional garden designer to come and listewn to what you want. Even if you can't afford the build all at once, at least you have a plan to work to and you can build it as budget allows, and when it's finished it will flow and work as you want it.

Good luck with an exciting project.
