Have we made a mistake or should we persevere??

Hi, weve just moved into our lovely 1950s home and really wanted to compliment our statement fireplace in our living room, but now weve started the skirting boards, we feel we may have complimented a little too much. Should we have just colour drenched the skirtings the same as the wall or should we keep going with the colour matched paint? Please ignore the dodgy paintwork… we tried with frogtape and it pulled the paint away need to patch it in. TIA x

Is the second pic what you have started? I would go back to the same colour as the wall or just plain white. Skirtings are functional, not a design feature. The fireplace is the feature. They stand out for the wrong reasons. Look at Houzz for inspo or buy a new interiors magazine or two or look online.

I agree with Isla. The walls complement the fireplace well. Complementary colours don't have to be matching colours, just colours that look good together.

hello bonnielynn75 and THANK YOU! your comment put a smile on my face re the red on the interior side of the door. It IS red on the inside as well, he insisted on that when we purchased it. no one here has it red on the inside and I wanted it to be white on the inside. do you see my dilemma?;) I agree with everything you are saying, I suppose this is the reason why so far I was not 100% sure about the black for the door either, although I like black...Agree, there is too much wall and I find the house to be looking a bit 'bland' and would like to change that. I LOVE shutters, but read somewhere that you never put shutters on wide windows, so got unsure about that, too...but perhaps just the one as I stated earlier. Would the color on that shutter be the same as the door (if I ever settle on a door color)? Unfortunately window boxes are not an option as we have quite a few cats and they may be used as litter boxes;) please don't tell me to get rid of the cats;)... Regarding the stoop (entrance) : we need to add another step (made of cement) on top of the existing step: it was removed when the new door was fitted. We were thinking of putting slate tiles or something dark to match the roof, if that makes any sense.... It is porous cement so unsuitable for painting, I think. What place in Ireland did you visit, we are close to the Irish Sea in the country surrounded by sheep;)...

Yes, I would and did start with cabinets. Browse through he kitchen photos here on Houzz until you determine your favorite styles. Start a kitchen idea book and save every photo that has something you like, cabinets will be your biggest investment. Once you know your style, begin thinking about counter tops and backsplash. One or the other will be your "star." If you already have a favorite, try to coordinate other choices with it. For example, I found my backsplash first, then chose the counter to go with it. Often people have their counter in first then struggle to find a backsplash. If you fall in love with a beautiful, busy granite you will want a simple backsplash. My floor was last, keeping it simple to avoid clashing with other choices. Good luck and have fun! This can be an overwhelming project but your friends at Houzz can help!

The tile is very pretty. I don't know if it is just the colours showing up differently on screen but the light grey appears to be a different tone (more purple to me) than your tile. If you want a light grey I would take the tile to the store and try for a better match. The dark color ties in nicely to the tile and could be very dramatic and stunning if the room gets a lot of light.

Hello Houzz Ireland, We are currently renovating a 1960's build - so as you know, there is a lot of decisions to be made!! So it would be nice to get some gems of advice from the experts to help us through this daunting task. Areas where we would really like some inspiration for - small bathroom downstairs. I would really like to do something fun with this room and although small, I think it could work really well with some funky wallpaper or possibly tiles?! I'm just not sure what to do with it. Also - pulling a whole house together?! Where do we start? We have the bigger pieces of furniture but how do I know what nest of tables goes best with a suite? Or what accessories will bring a room together? I'm due a second baby in 2 weeks time so any help at this stage would be so amazing - to guide me on the right interior design path for our new house. I think the burgundy anchors it in the 90s and white would be better.

your skirtings are plain which is completely appropriate for a 1950s house but since your fireplace is fancy and since you were obviously trying to make the skirtings stand out consider instead adding a timber moulding above the skirtingboards to make them look more substantial.

you might also investigate the cost of replacing the skirtings which may be similar in cost to buying mouldings and would already be white.
