Creating garden privacy ideas

The garden in this photo needs a tall tree or a set of trees to cover the view from the overlooking house. It needs something over 5m tall/very fast growing. We prefer not to have Leylandi there because of the extensive roots system. Please share your thoughts on this and also what we can use for screening and creating privacy throught the whole garden. Many thanks.

Personally I don’t think you need a wall of greenery like your neighbours hedge . I think the problem is the absence of anything big in your garden now. Would you plant a couple of trees your eyes will be drawn to those rather than your neighbours windows.

There are nurseries that supply larger trees for immediate impact

Just a quick note to thank you all for sharing your thought, ideas, experience and time. I especially want to thank Bluenan and decoenthusiaste for being with me through the all process for the last 6 months or so..., just wanted to post few photos of the results (https://www.houzz.com/discussions/any-ideas-for-final-touches-to-this-living-dinning-room-dsvw-vd~569586) as I feel it is not only me who created this space but it is your creations as much as mine. It may not be perfect or according to the the "Rules", but it is Me and my family. Each and every piece was chosen by me in different parts of the world and each one of them has a unique story behind. I am very pleased with my space. I love it! I am very blessed. .... and so I am off to my new project now... Back to school.... that's really going to be hard ;) Thank you all, once again.

Thanks. Beautiul space. Can you please take a photo of the wall that is across from the island? -there is no overhang on the counter...so I am not seeing stools there on either the long portion of the island or the shorter portion by the window. -if you mean by the window, there is a door on one side and an oven on the other.....hence it is a traffic way,,,,,,you don't want stools there I am not sure why you feel the need to put something there. You might consider art on the wall across from the island to ground that wall. Need a photo.

It might be an idea to get a local arboriculturist to assess the trees before planting anything. If they've not been looked at for a while there may be some thinning, branch removal, felling to be done. They will also advise if any have disease. Then see what you have left. Some thinning can increase light levels and moisture enabling you to plant more varieties of plants and create character areas in the garden. Shade areas with ferns or sunny glades. Japanese azaleas work well on the fringe. Swathes of cyclamen look beautiful. Generally, large swathes of the same plant looks more natural, as it gives the appearance the plant has colonised naturally. Hi Maribel - have a look at Horatio's Garden. It is an amazing project which has provided gardens for patients recovering from spinal injuries. There are plans to provide the same for all spinal units around the country. The designers were award winning and it has been featured on Gardeners World. I know about it as a friend of mine who spent a year in the unit now fundraises for the charity. I know your little son's needs are different to those of spinal injured patients, but there has been so much thought put into this garden that it may trigger some ideas for you. Looks like the neighbours have already planted some trees in an attempt to block you out too - or are they in your garden? I'd check what they are and see how quickly they are likely to grow, as that might be all you need.

Otherwise, look at pleached trees - maybe beech or pear/apple trees, hornbeam, photinia - but beware that fast-growing species will grow fast and then you'll spend many more years pruning and trimming to keep them in check.

I'd also add smaller trees in your garden closer to the house - that might be enough to block the view from inside the house due to the tree being closer to your house. Also just to add some height and interest in your garden as it's quite open at the moment - appreciate the small trees added to the right border.

Try pleached trees. The only issue is that they are expensive, At the moment watering is an issue. With no real rain since February planting large plants that need frequent watering is someting to be considered. I have just planted himalayan birch trees so I have this issue. Photinia red robin is the most budget friendly pleached tree. Paramount Plants has some really good deals.

As above, pleached trees. But use Carpinus betlulus (hornbeam) as it is the most tolerant of our weather conditions and disease resistant.
