Creating garden privacy ideas

The garden in this photo needs a tall tree or a set of trees to cover the view from the overlooking house. It needs something over 5m tall/very fast growing. We prefer not to have Leylandi there because of the extensive roots system. Please share your thoughts on this and also what we can use for screening and creating privacy throught the whole garden. Many thanks.

Personally I don’t think you need a wall of greenery like your neighbours hedge . I think the problem is the absence of anything big in your garden now. Would you plant a couple of trees your eyes will be drawn to those rather than your neighbours windows.

There are nurseries that supply larger trees for immediate impact

Hi, you have a lovely home! I read through your thread, and I like Dar Eckarts suggestion above the best. I think because of the symmetry of it as an H shaped house is symmetrical, and it would also keep the space looking decorated but still open and uncluttered which is what an entrance should be. Sorry, but I don't care for the bookcase idea in an entrance. I also noticed the masks you have, and think it would be great to decorate the space using them as inspiration. Here is a photo to show you the kind of rug I think would work here.

Hi ! I think this house will benefit from from plenty of toy storage in the main family living space ( assuming this will be in the extension at rear ) as while little ones are so small they need to be in view - so perhaps you could design with this in mind and add a dedicated laundry room near the WC perhaps ? The current play room could maybe be used as a different function ? Do you need a guest room /study perhaps ? For when family members come to stay ? If so maybe the wc could be upgraded to a shower room ? There's lots of things you can do to make this work for you - just write a list of what could make your life easier now and for the next 5-10 years or so ... Some things will evolve or be ready to change by then - so being clever with your designing and planning now should put you in a good place further down the line too !! If this is something you need help with - hiring in a pro might be a good way of dealing with it - or alternatively put your wish list on here and see if you can get some fab ideas from the helpful Houzzers !!!

Hi Maribel - have a look at Horatio's Garden. It is an amazing project which has provided gardens for patients recovering from spinal injuries. There are plans to provide the same for all spinal units around the country. The designers were award winning and it has been featured on Gardeners World. I know about it as a friend of mine who spent a year in the unit now fundraises for the charity. I know your little son's needs are different to those of spinal injured patients, but there has been so much thought put into this garden that it may trigger some ideas for you. Considering building a wall (no pun intended) along the left and right sides of the garden in this photo Left side Right side A similar type of brick to the ones used here The overall objective is brighten up the garden without trying to make it look too flashy. On the left side I'd like to plant Portuguese laurel for privacy and prevent overlooking from the adjoining property. The slide and swings in the photo have to go due to wear and will replace with a treehouse at the bottom of the garden beside the blue shed. The garden is approx. 20 metres long and 10 metres wide. Would really appreciate any design tips or potential pitfalls...

Looks like the neighbours have already planted some trees in an attempt to block you out too - or are they in your garden? I'd check what they are and see how quickly they are likely to grow, as that might be all you need.

Otherwise, look at pleached trees - maybe beech or pear/apple trees, hornbeam, photinia - but beware that fast-growing species will grow fast and then you'll spend many more years pruning and trimming to keep them in check.

I'd also add smaller trees in your garden closer to the house - that might be enough to block the view from inside the house due to the tree being closer to your house. Also just to add some height and interest in your garden as it's quite open at the moment - appreciate the small trees added to the right border.

Try pleached trees. The only issue is that they are expensive, At the moment watering is an issue. With no real rain since February planting large plants that need frequent watering is someting to be considered. I have just planted himalayan birch trees so I have this issue. Photinia red robin is the most budget friendly pleached tree. Paramount Plants has some really good deals.

As above, pleached trees. But use Carpinus betlulus (hornbeam) as it is the most tolerant of our weather conditions and disease resistant.
