How to improve decking colour/protection

last month

Hi,

I laid some hardwood (yellow balau—strange name as it is red to brown, not yellow) decking a few years ago. Although wood turning grey seems to be the favourite of architects, I do not like it. Hence, every couple of years, I have sanded down the decking and coated it with varnish, decking oil, or stain. Currently, I have settled on stain, but I would like it to last a bit longer now that my knees are beginning to object. Has anyone any experience with a product that I could apply over the stain to make it last longer? Most damage comes from wear and the sun as the decking is in an alcove directly south facing.

Cuprinol Ducks Back lasts pretty well. I stained the slats of our driveway gate with 2 coats when it was installed in 2022 and only now does it need redoing. It faces west so gets a lot of afternoon and late evening sun. To save your knees do you use a roller and an extension pole? It really is the best way to do floors. You don't have to sand it either. Just powerwash, let it dry and then stain it. You could seal it with yacht varnish but its very drippy to use and I'm not sure a roller would cut it. Best of luck.

Many thanks for the reply, beneficial, and I will check it out. I do use a roller, and you are correct, it saves a lot of time and pain. I have used yacht varnish in the past, but the problem comes when you need to remove it.
