garden ideas for a a family with 3 young girls under 6

I have a typical boring rectangular garden and I need some ideas for how to bring this space to life. I want it to be green but functional and I want it to be on a budget. Any ideas?

Do you know who owns the fences? The left one is leaning badly and on the right hand side you have no privacy and a mashup of fence types. I would sort/replace them first. It depends what your girls like to do? Are you planning a trampoline or sandpit, paddling pool or all three? There is a lot of clearing to be done first.

Which areas do you want to keep for the adults, are you keeping the bottom patio, how does the sun travel?. Dimensions?

My first thought was two (or one and a half semi circle depending on length) full width grass circles maybe 2m apart with planting between. Trampoline and dolls house on/near the rear circle and swingball, badminton net on the nearest circle with benches and planting inbetween on gravel, the dolls house could be replaced with a shed/ summer house when they are older, a front opening shed with glass doors can be made to look like a dolls house…..painted with window boxes etc and could store the toys

Just a quick note to thank you all for sharing your thought, ideas, experience and time. It may not be perfect or according to the the "Rules", but it is Me and my family. Each and every piece was chosen by me in different parts of the world and each one of them has a unique story behind. I am very pleased with my space. I love it! I am very blessed. .... and so I am off to my new project now... Back to school.... that's really going to be hard ;) Thank you all, once again.

If you want custom cream panelling built from scratch, it is likely to take you more than three weeks to line up a contractor, get it built and then painted. If you want to use beadboard (thin, lightweight, cheap) you can do it yourself if you are good at the small precision cuts around the wood window trim and behind the radiators. You can get a custom built wood cover with doors for your tv or use the painting over tv disguise made with hinges. I think the room is beautiful as it is. Spend some money on a truly beautiful, impressive chandelier, have it centered over the table. If you want to impress relatives at an event, the chandelier is the way to go. Clean the windows for extra sparkle. If you are in the US, try Home Decorators http://www.homedecorators.com for DVD storage cabinets that are closed. I would not get a rug for this room unless I was ready to get it cleaned frequently and I could find one that looked good with dog hair on it and did not show stains. A good quality, highly patterned wool Oriental rug will do that job nicely. Such a rug is an investment and may take longer than three weeks to find.

fragle0 ... congratulations on the new addition to your family. Have been following your lovely changes. You probably won't have time to work on the decor for a while. Just wanted to suggest that you try pulling the nesting tables forward to be more in line with front of the chairs & placing your floor lamp to the back of them. This will give a bit more light at night for reading in that area.Also switching the plant by the fireplace & the one on the corner by the sofa.

Playhouse your right, i was thinking a small colourful plastic one but thats the kind of shed i meant ….just not on stilts, great fun

I would replace the fence first and then think about a good base for the trampoline. It would also be a good time to plant some tall creepers or pleached trees (might not be budget friendly) for some privacy. Creepers could go against the brick wall. Plants take years to grow here so the sooner you plant the sooner they will get growing. Would a sandpit or maybe some raised planters for grow your own be of interest as they grow older? A small water feature is also always a great addition to a garden.
