paint for fence panels

Hello,
I have three rough-sawn fence panels on the side of my front garden and, as you can see from the photo, each one is a different colour. I would like to paint them all so that they look the same colour.
However, from the jobs I have done before with paint designed for rough-sawn wood, I know that this type of paint doesn’t cover the wood completely. If I use this type of paint, I’m concerned that the panels’ original colours will still be somewhat visible underneath the layer of paint I use and, in the end, the panels still won’t look the same colour, even if I use the same paint on all three.
So, does anyone know of some suitable paint for rough-sawn wood that will cover the panels well enough so that they all look the same colour when painted?

@Daisy England - Yes, Cuprinol has already been suggested to me and somebody on another forum has actually told me they do opaque finishes. I will look into that.

Hi Daniel, have you thought of a Cuprinol preservative instead of paint, it sinks in and doesn’t peel and lasts a long time.

Hi Ann - Will this solve my problem though? According to what I have seen on the Net, I don’t think a Cuprinol wood preserver would make all three panels look the same colour. These preservers are described as "clear", "colourless" or "lightly tinted".

Hi Daniel, I have one in dark chestnut and also a black and while they are expensive they work well and I don’t have to keep re-treating them. Maybe you could give the plalest palest panel two coats but I think there will always be a little difference.

I really like them as they are because they're so different! I don't think they'll match brilliantly even if you get them all the same colour, so I'd suggest you paint them and add reed screening or similar. If they were mine though, I'd lean into the different and leave them untouched but add different planting in front of each.

Valspar decking paint will cover them and will last. Many colours to choose from.

It would help if you could jet clean them.

Cuprinol offer loads of colours and it’s for use on rough sawn timber. So easy to use too. I apply 2-3 coats initially and top the colour up every other year.

Do you own these fences? Even if they are yours to paint as you wish, it is a good idea to let your neighbour know that you plan to paint them because the paint might come through the gaps and look unsightly on their side. Might be worth offering to paint both sides. I agree with Anna G that actually they don’t need to be painted because they are in good condition as they are. They would definitely benefit from planting underneath them to divert attention from the different colours.

@C Harrison – I’m not sure who technically owns these fences, as they are between me and my neighbour, but I know that my neighbour – who are a housing association – won’t object if I paint my side.

As for the possibility of paint dripping through to my neighbour’s side, yes I am aware of that. I was going to remove these panels and lay them flat before painting them and putting them back on. That should make it easier to keep the paint on my side, although I’ll still have to be careful.

You can't remove fence panels that aren't yours. Your deeds will indicate if the boundary is yours or next doors.

The minute you remove these fence panels, especially if you don’t check who owns them or speak to your neighbours first, you will create unnecessary tension and possibly conflict with your neighbours. Leave the fences alone and concentrate on planting in front of them. If you’re not the owner, the resident might not object but the housing association might take legal action against you.

@C Harrison – Yes, I can talk to my neighbours first - by this, I mean to the person from the housing association who looks after next door’s property. However, I have talked to her before when I made some changes to the boundary and she didn’t object - I changed a fence panel and moved the end post - , so I would be surprised if she objected to me painting my side.

And my deeds? I have read them before and I don’t think they mention who owns the boundary. The documents I have are actually confusing: when I tried to check where my boundary was on the other side of my bungalow, I realized I had three sets of documents that show three different things.
