We are planning a large two level hard wood deck and unsure which way to lay the boards. Either in the same direction as the internal engineered oak floorboards or perpendicular to them. If laid the same direction the boards on the top deck would long enough to reach the steps without joins. If we lay them perpendicular as in the sketch you can see where joins would potentially go. The internal floorboards are 240mm wide. We haven’t ordered the decking boards yet. Also like decks with picture frame borders. The sketch shows the top level in a lighter brown and the lower level in a dark grey. The area outside kitchen splash back is concrete We have to step the deck down so we can have a table under the tree canopy. The house is in the Uk but it’s inspired by Australian style outdoor spaces.
Laying them in the same direction draws your eye out and creates lines to follow. It's the preferred choice whenever possible. We laid our outside porcelain paving to line up with the porcelain floor inside so that the grout joints were continuous except for the threshhold.
If you lay them the same way as the internal floorboards, there are two things to consider. One, your eyes will be drawn straight to the rear boundary and foreshorten the garden, if the garden is not very deep, and two, if the decking is not the same as the internal floorboards it will look mismatched as the sizes will be different and the type of wood will be different, also over time the external boards will fade due to exposure. I would go perpendicular or even look at 45 degrees to the internal layout. This way it doesn't look like your tying to match the inside.
