Patio dilemma - what would you do?

In the years when bartering was the norm, 40+ years ago my husband laid a patio with old house bricks. (second photo)

I loved it, especially as it aged and we could move the swing and table and chairs around when we felt like a change.

Recently, we extended (see top photo), using the old patio bricks elsewhere. I wish I had kept them to re-lay as a patio.

How do I make a new patio that is permeable and has a surface that will support a swing seat (like the old one) and new dining furniture?

The new area is about 45 sq m, or 21' x 22'. South facing.

Bricks and paving stones will probably be too expensive now (bring back the old days!)

I wondered about moss, or a camomile lawn, or a mix of grass and some sort of paving to keep the cost reasonable.

Any suggestions or comments gratefully received and considered.
