Garden Patio Colour

Hello,

Thanks to some previous help on this forum, we've begun making progress on the design for our new garden, but we're struggling to find a colour for the patio and our planters that will complement our house.

Please see attached a picture of the exterior of our extension, which is built using yellow brick. The wall on the left-hand side will be removed. We're also considering painting the damp course black.

Now, on to the design. I'm far from an expert with SketchUp, so you'll have to forgive me for some of the designs. Hopefully, it gives an idea of what we're aiming to achieve.

Ultimately, we will have a garden office built, which we had planned to clad in black concrete board with black bifolds.

In our initial plans, we had considered using sandstone for the patio and path and black render for the patio wall and raised flower beds. However, my partner isn't entirely convinced with this colour combination. The sandstone in the below image is "mint" in colour. We have also considered that porcelain might be a better option.

What would you recommend for the patio, paths, and raised planters that would complement the style and colour of the house?

A Teagreen shaded patio or a mountain green shaded patio a bit lighter than this colour palette would be an excellent choice I do think

What about a limestone patio mixed with composite wood for the other? Dark grey for the planters and the stone with gravel for the path?

I really think it's the plants that are supposed to be the center of attraction so I have a hard time thinking of anything better than painting the wall gray and the planters charcoal. However, trying to keep an open mind I did locate the photo above with yellow planters, which would be pretty against a gray wall. But looking at your very lovely blue door, I could see repeating that very same color on the planters and leaving the wall gray. It's always a good thing to repeat an existing color when it looks as great as that one does. That blue would be dynamite on a planter filled with green plants and colorful blooms.

This garden was challenging, a steep sloping site and harsh coastal winds. We decided to level out the ground from the house, to allow for a patio and lawn. The steep slope to the ocean was planted with hardy ground cover plants e.g Cotoneaster. We carefully chose more colourful planting to border the lawn, that could also withstand the strong coastal winds e.g. Nepeta, Lavender, Hebe. The silver granite patio sits beautifully against the lush green lawn, and reflects the sunset.

Tiled patio - is it worth it

We are getting a patio done this spring and I would really like to tile it. We live in the Mid-West of Ireland (plenty of rain) and I have a north facing garden so the patio space will only get sunlight in the afternoon/evening. I would like to tile this outdoor space but a lot of people said it'll be slippy, they'll wear badly and they're just not suitable for an Irish climate. I'm looking at porcelain tiles (frost resistant) that are r11 so suitable (on paper) for outdoors, but would love some advise from anyone that has outdoor tiles and if it's worth it! Thank you

Hi there

Mint sandstone is very porous and gets dirty quickly - make sure you seal it if you go for this. Another option could be a limestone (sealed) whch is only slightly more expensive but is better long term.

The dark black is bold for the studio and may date - I love this one of my clients - goes well with a lighter stone. (Mid planting...)
