Bedrooms Storage Design Dilemma

Awkward shaped room - storage solutions

Please find attached a copy of my floor plan where we extended a box room on a semi.

The room is an awkward shape and it’s not big either.

I want to keep my dressing table / make up bits near the new window to allow natural light and the builders have installed spotlights directly above here too.

Given the awkward shape of the room, please can someone give me some ideas as to fitted wardrobes/ storage solutions so I can use this space as a dressing room.

Maybe mirrorred wardrobes in the alcove and dressing table opposite, best to have natural light on your face where possible unless the window is south facing then it could become blinding however. Then I would have a chest of drawers on the stair wall and a smaller chest on the bedroom wall by the other window. if you could change the door opening to the other side then a taller unit here would work and not make it feel too closed in. you might be able to fit a small armchair by the first window

It looks like you’ve done a great job extending the space, and with some smart storage solutions, you can definitely make it work as a stylish and functional dressing room.

Since you want your dressing table by the window (which is ideal for natural light), I’d recommend using the angled wall or the longer straight wall for fitted wardrobes. To maximize storage, consider going for floor-to-ceiling wardrobes with a mix of hanging space, drawers, and shelves. Opting for sliding or pocket doors would help save space and prevent the room from feeling cramped.

For the awkward corner or the smaller nooks, you could add custom shelving or a built-in shoe rack. If you want a sleek, cohesive look, you could have the wardrobe doors mirrored, which will also help reflect light and make the room feel more spacious.

Lastly, to keep the dressing table area uncluttered, consider floating shelves or wall-mounted organizers above it for makeup storage, keeping everything accessible without taking up precious surface space.

Mary, I am very glad to hear from you. I think of you often. It hurt me terribly when that unthoughtful person said what she said. I can only imagine how it must have hurt you. I would love to see how you have decorated for Christmas. I am almost certain there are differences between how our 2 countries do it. What an awkward space! The door opens into the room where the hearth juts out, making it even narrower. In an ideal world I would want to make the fireplace smaller (a flat hole in the wall with no hearth) and change the door to open outwards. However I'm guessing they may not be options! You need the room to work in 2 ways, one as a cosy space for the adults in the evening and the other as a larger clear space for the kids during the day, a tough call! I would consider dividing the room into 2 defined areas, one for kids and one for adults. The adult space should be at the window end and mean moving the TV to the other side of the fireplace. The sofa could go under the end window and 2 chairs either side. This will be a tight fit, would you consider buying a new L shaped one in a more compact design? This could sit by the radiator with a chair opposite. A rug and coffee table would further define this space and make it feel cosy. At the other end, you could place your toy storage behind the door, (maybe invest in some more!) and then bean bags could give the kids some seating for watching TV and playing games. The TV being freestanding could swivel according to day/night position. I hope that gives you some ideas, I'll try to find some photos to illustrate what I mean! Good Luck!

Firstly, get matching beds and put them end to end so the 6month old is closer to the door for checking on in the night. If you need a changing unit in the room then it could slot between the beds. I'd like to see pics of the wardrobe and the radiator wall. I'm imagining it is probably in an awkward place like smack in the middle of the wall ; D. How about getting a radiator cover and then above that making a shallow bookshelf for their smaller books, special toys and a few photos. Then I'd have matching wardrobes either side to store everything else! Décor - not sure if you're thinking that far ahead yet but I'd paint all the walls white to keep the timber from looking too yellowy (I doubt you've got time to be painting furniture!) get matching bedding for both beds, a wall decal (inexpensive and easy to change as they get older or if you sell the house) in pink, a basic white drum shade for the light (IKEA) and a set of pink or white eyelet curtains and pink tiebacks. Most importantly, have fun!

Why don't you have an L shape and use the area under the window also for your sink and a couple of extra units? you could add shelves on either side of the window? Not sure why your fridge has to go at that end? might be best at the other end? As Sarah, suggests, get full height cupboards, and put the microwave in one of those, so that you're not losing so much space. Extra storage is probably more useful than having the microwave on display? It can easily be put on a shelf within a cupboard. (Our isn't even in our kitchen, but then we only use it once a week or so... so really depends) I'd also suggest drawers to the bottom of your units instead of cupboards.

Try this idea of two beds in a corner with maximum storage space as much as possible, remaining part of the bedroom you can have a small dressing table with little storage capacity , the image I sent you is a minimum space occupying dressing table available on Amazon.com and the brand is lvifur
