Help me with living room spacing and furniture

Hello everyone. I need some help with living room furniture so that it’s nicely spaced out.
It’s now been a year and I still didn’t find the right idea…
Thing is I need my makeup desk here (I can’t put it anywhere else), but it’s the only piece of furniture that doesn’t resonate with my living room.
I also have two bookshelves and wanted to add an entryway cabinet with a built-in shoe rack and coat rack.

The sitting room has clean lines but the bookcase desk area looks cluttered in comparison ……I would create a ‘room‘ with the bookcases along the entrance wall, possibly with the backs of the cabinets facing the room with the plants trailling down, so you could place an L shaped sofa against the units, this would hide the coats and shoes but still allow access to the desk.

If you have space, another couch of a complimentary colour to your couch with its back facing the dining room (or an occasional chair there on an angle) would be good. A large rug to tie together the seating and a coloured wall where the existing couch is (be it paint or wall paper or a large artwork) would help make it cosy.

Help! how should I arrange my living room furniture?

I'd love some advice on how to arrange my living room furniture, starting with a completely blank canvas. The room will be used as a child-free retreat, mainly in the evenings for reading, watching movies and some entertaining. The window faces south east so it is bright during the day and looks over the front garden. We will probably get built ins around the fireplace to store books. I am thinking about getting a corner sofa oriented towards the tv on the right side of the fireplace but I am worried then that the wall opposite the window will just be blank. I'd like to put a chair there too but when you are entering the room I think it will appear to stick out a lot. What could I put on that wall? Could I orient the room the opposite way by putting the tv on the left of the fireplace or would that feel strange entering the room between couches? Would it be better if the door opened the opposite way? What size should the sofa be, given the room is 4.1x4.2m? I have attached a diagram of the room layout and what I am thinking currently. Any suggestions welcome! Thank you!

Hi there I’m building a new house and need to buy furniture as we are about 12-16 weeks out now. I have struggled with furniture layout as had originally been thinking of a corner couch in the middle or the roof so fire and tv would be visible when you sat down, but I drew it on floor in chalk and all it did was create a walkway around the couch with no real space for anything else - eg additional chair at the back end of the room etc. Felt to me like a waste of space and no function. I seem to have a lot of window and not so much wall to work with and as the ceiling is vaulted at the end where I have the fireplace seems to me would be odd not to orientate the furniture towards that view! I’ve drawn an alternative option in a programme I found online which I set out below with some pictures. The ceiling is vaulted to about 4.5 metres or so at the wall where the plant is in the picture below. Inset fire on that wall and tv on wall opposite over a sideboard. Any suggestions / improvements would be greatly appreciated- many thanks I’m advance!

You said the make up desk needed to be in the lounge and looked out of place so I thought if we saw photos of the bedroom we may have been able to suggest how to squeeze it in there.

So the sofa unfortunately needs to stay that way (it will be changed in the future, maybe with an angular sofa to that it divides the space better), because I have a projector that projects on the white wall in front of it.
Anyway, here are a few pics of my bedroom (it is really small, hence I don’t find I can place my desk here since it would be too crowded; I’ll take the out and add two wood nightstands).

Amina, thanks for providing more photos. Firstly, can I ask, is the benefit of having your dressing table in the lounge the fact that you won’t disturb a partner with lights and a hairdryer? If so, then I can understand why you’d want it out of the bedroom,. If not, I can suggest three places in the bedroom that may suit your dressing table. How about in front of the window? Or where your ironing board (?) currently is? Or where the large chest of drawers by the side of your bed currently is? By changing your dressing table for one with a side pedestal you’ll gain more drawer space. And if you did place it by your bed, would the large chest of drawers fit where the ironing board is?

Thank you so much for the advice. So the chest of drawers will eventually go in the bathroom so it’s not a problem. I could think about placing it beside the bed even though the room is really small.
Under the window couldn’t possibly go because I have to open and close the shutters. I don’t have an iron board.
What about the rest of the living room? I actually have no ideas.. :(

Hi Amina, the corner where your make-up area is would it be possible to have a tall cupboard built with a shelf with lighting for doing your make-up, and shelves above for storage?

Hi Ann. So it would be possible but I actually don’t need much more storage as the drawers will go in the bathroom. I also like every piece of furniture I have, but I find them just “put there” and not too cohesive with one another. As the living room acts as kitchen, living room and makeup “studio” I find it hard to divide the space practically and also aesthetically pleasing

Hi there. I think it is all the different heights of furniture that are kind of jarring to look at and why it looks a bit un planned. I like the style of the book cases but I think they should both be flat against the wall. I would move the full length mirror and hang it on the wall in the bedroom or on the wall to the right of the door if you want it in that room. I would replace the coat rack and shoe bench with a white closed cupboard the same height as the book cases and have it in the middle of them. Remove the little chest of drawers next to long media unit and the wooden screen. If the makeup table is cluttered and you want to hide it then it could be hidden in a cupboard which is what people do with work from home desks. I will try and find some images for you.

Both of these are desks but could easily be for a dressing table - the beauty being you can just shut the door on the mess!

One idea is to create a dedicated “nook” for it by using a decorative screen or a tall plant as a subtle divider. This would visually separate it from the main living area without closing off the space entirely. You could also replace the current stool with a small accent chair that complements your living room style, making it feel more intentional.

For the bookshelves, consider spacing them out slightly or adding a slim console or bench between them to create more balance. This would make the wall feel less like a storage zone and more like a styled feature.

Your idea of an entryway cabinet with a built-in shoe rack and coat storage is great. To avoid overcrowding, choose a sleek, narrow design with closed storage to keep it looking tidy. A mirror or artwork above the cabinet would visually expand the space and add some personality.

Finally, a large area rug or layering a smaller textured rug near the makeup desk could help define zones and make everything feel more grounded.

Select the two corners for the book shelves that saves the space, ask your designer for a small slider or partition so that you can place your dressing table and cabinet on either side , see that the partition is away from the main 🚪 door, adjust your cushion in relation to the partition and cabinet that saves the space for dressing room
