Excuse the rubbish box! I was using it to visualise how much space the ladder shelf would take (as the width is almost exactly the same at 37cm)

Comments (37)Hi, thanks for your comment. I totally agree - I actually have a large art print on order (vertical/ portrait orientation) and that will be replacing the mirror when it arrives. From previous comments I received everyone seems have different opinions on sofa choices but I think I'm pretty happy with the L shape one I've gone with - it fits the space a lot better (I think!) than the 3 & 2 seaters I previously had. Comments (14)Love your floors good job. Good luck in design school. I find working in the field is more help than taking classes. There are many furn stores that hire designer or want to be designers, for their stores. To help clients, and go to their homes, to help them buy furn. You can gain so much knowledge this way . And make a living at the same time. Working as a assist to a designer, is a great way to break in to the field. A lot of designers will hire from the school. I'm sure you have a job board. Check it for even part time work. It pays off. Now your room. Like your sofa. Good color to work with. But, don't forget the small stuff. Like window covers, art, area rugs and accessories. Putting a room together is the hardest thing to do. It's very easy to put a sofa and chairs in a room. It's the accessories that bring a room together. Study a designer you relate too on TV. There are many I used to love Candice Olsen. Not sure if she is on the air. She does have books out. Study them see how rooms are pulled together. Then copy it for your room. Color is a matter of taste. Look for unusual things to add to your room. A simple thing like stacking some books together with a art item on top,is inexpensive and space filling look. You don't have to spend a lot. Rug, pillows window panels are found everywhere. Unless you have unlimited budget, can shop, Ikea, Pier One, World Market, Z galleries, West Elm. Even some deals at Restoration Hardware. Sometimes just go window shopping at above, to get ideas, find fun things. Don't rush. Take your time and find just the right thing for you. Good luck. That being said go a 6x9 rug in a traditional look with yr red and gold print. Stay with those colors just go different tones. Going the dark reds over bright is way to go in traditional. The bold colors work better with a modern look. Mix up design, size and prints in pillows. Panels on end of windows with a bamboo shade in dark brown. A inexpensive look that is timeless. Panels could be a gold velvet, that will give you a more traditional look. Move media for TV closer to firepl. If in budget go a round or square 24" coffee table in glass to show off rug. Over firepl a big 36" sun burst mirror hang 7" from top of mantel. TJMax has great price. Also ck them for pillows, rugs. They have a great return policy, which is very important. Always ck store policy on returning. Because you will be returning, it's part of the job. I will buy. 3 rugs at a time, to try in clients home. That's OK. Things look different in different light. Comments (7)Hi Emmeline. Have measured as best I could. The room is 9ft wide and 18ft long going right up to the bay window sill.Imagine you are standing in the doorway. The door opens inwards and to the left. The space between the open door frame and the wall perpendicular i.e. facing the bay window is approx 2ft. On that perpendicular wall are cubes for art work, a tv and a flat chrome edged gas fire. The fire is 1ft of the ground.. The cube unit is 2ft off the ground as is the tv. So not much space to play around with there. Still standing in the doorway on the wall to your right is a longish radiator. At a slight diaganonal opposite you is a window. Height from floor is 2ft6in. Length of window is 3ft Distance ofrom fire place wall to window is 8ft4in. . Distance from end of window to alcove wall of bay window is 3ft2in. There are two small alcove wall each 2ft6in in length. The bay window is a square shape rather than curved. The length is 4ft. Depth 3ft. Height 2ft.6in.from floor. We moved house recently so the furniture does not really fit the space. I would like to keep the sofa if possible. It is a standard shape with rounded arms and very comfortable. It is a 2 and 1/2 seater approx 5ft 8in long and 3ft high. In an ideal world I'd like 1920s 30s or mid century scandanavian. But would also like to keep the sofa. The only thing I can think of doing is put the sofa facing the fire and take it from there. What about a window seat which would also provide storage? If the sofa faces the fire what do I do with the rest of the room? Chair angled at small window... ottoman??? As for colours the room is painted chalk white. When you come in the front door ( 1930s with coloured glass) there is a curved polished plaster wall in burnt umber. So am thinking moss green, mustard i.e autumn colours a la Orla Kiely??? Comments (13)Thanks maumason I think you're right about the more vibrant pops of mustard yellow, and I definately need an area rug. I've photo of romans below, they're a charcol grey and the walls are a light grey. Blenheim I like your photos and do think white fireplace is nice with navy wall but I don't think I'll attempt to paint my marble fireplace! I do like that mirror in your photo and maybe something similar would look better than what I have. I think i've too much going on with the feature yellow on the fireplace and the canvas and perhaps why it looks out of balance. I think if I paintrd he fireplace wall light grey like the other walls, changed the mirror, and painted the wall behind the couch instead (maybe navy? Dark grey?) it might look more focused? I know sofa and chairs are a bit chunky and I don't love them, but will have to put up with them for another while. They are recliners and super comfy which is important for me though!! I do like my coffee table and tv unit, it's reclaimed pine and looks nicer in real life - perhaps it'l work better once I get my dream sofa!!...See More- 5 months ago

5 months agoIf you have curtains you won’t be able to pull them right back so they will cover the window a little. That’s not an issue, but it will block some of the light coming into the room, but they will add cosiness. Looking at your lovely room I think linen or linen mix curtains would look great and tie in with your sofa. Or even velvet in a soft cream or taupe would look lovely. I do agree with Minnie about changing the internal door to a solid one to create a bit more privacy.

Hi Shash, sorry I didn’t notice the radiator, but I agree you shouldn’t cover it with long curtains. I have a similar window to you and I have a wide window sill too so I opted for curtains that sit on the sill. As the sill anchors them they don’t look like they are hanging half mast, so they would work. Another option is Roman Blinds. They add cosiness but don’t take up as much room and you have space above the window to attach them. With the door, white is absolutely fine but I also think your wall colour would look nice on the door but you will need satinwood or eggshell which is made for woodwork. You could keep the architrave around the door and the skirting white if you wish or match it to the door colour. So many options! This is my window with the curtains sitting on the wide window sill.

Hi again. You've all given me some great ideas, and I'm weighing up my options which looks to me are:
1. interlined Roman blinds, over the recess. Hang from close to the ceiling, drop to window sill. Do not remove existing blinds
2. Interlined Roman blinds in the recess, drop to window sill. Remove existing blinds
3. As with option 2, plus dress curtains
4. Curtains in the recess, drop to window sill. Remove existing blinds
I am veering towards option 1 if I'm honest, if I can get away with leaving the existing blinds as is. Of course if leaving existing blinds is an absolute no no then please let me know. Either way, please let me know what material and colour would suit the most?
As with the door, painting it in the same colour as the wall could be a great idea (eggshell) however I have forgotten the official name of the paint colour on the wall. It was an off white vanilla type of colour. Will try and find out!
Also if I was to have curtains for the door, would it need to match the colour of the blinds? And I guess linen would be a good material to use?
Attached are pictures of the room that's actually tidy this time. Foolishly, the original blinds were not installed against the window itself but flush with the recess above it, leaving a gap between the blinds and the window. From an insulation point of view, I would assume a Roman blind / door curtain combo would block the draft circulation.

Hi, it’s your home so do what you love. I personally wouldn’t have Roman Blinds and the slatted blinds together, but that’s me, I think it would look bulky. However, I assume you want privacy during the day so you want to keep the slatted blinds? If you don’t need daytime privacy then a Roman Blind would look very smart, but it’s your home and you must do what you wish. Whatever you have on the window and door, keep it the same fabric. Linen or linen mix would be perfect. We are only here to advise.

Update of how it's going. Couldn't find the pattern available to whatwhat similar Sonia suggested, and went for this. I like it, do wish it was a lighter colour but it's ok. Next will be a door curtain, and working out if I should do same shade, same colour same fabric, or something slightly different. Also going to get a pelmet that goes across the Roman blinds and the door curtain to complete the look. Also thinking maybe a lighter shade with patterns tototototo match the yellow and green
