We live in a terrace house where the stairs run down through the centre of the ground floor, dividing the living room and dining room. When we first moved in, under the stairs was open (see pic no. 1). We decided to close off under the stairs so separate the rooms more. We built a simple bookcase - on the living room side it is just drywall (pic no. 2) with the bookshelves in the dining room side (pic no. 3). We're now renovating the dining room and would like to use the space under the stairs for storage. We would like it to be cupboards under the stairs with access from the dining room. We don't want the cupboards to be the full depth of the stairs as it will take up a lot of space in the living room but will need to make it deeper than it currently for the space to be of any use. Has anyone done anything similar or seen anything like this? In my head the living room side will look pretty similar and just be a plain wall, but I'm not sure design wise what to go for in the dining room side. So far, we have taken down the shelving in the alcove above the TV in pic and have put in a built in unit (pic no. 4). The bottom half has cupboard doors which were added after the picture was taken! Any ideas or suggestions for under the stairs would be appreciated 😊
I’m afraid I find the under stairs bookcase cluttered. As you have added a new bookcase adjacent to the stairs, I would be tempted to remove the original bookcase and just plasterboard it, like the living room side. You could add some kind of storage there if you must but it will still look cluttered. I find stairs in the middle of an opened out area looked better how it was originally, that is two rooms and a hallway.
I did struggle to find some images of open plan stairs storage, but here’s a few. I’ve also included one where the stairs are left as they are in a small fisherman’s cottage (first pic).
