Did you use the water based or oil baser Zinsser primer? I think the oil based would be better for this job. Did you clean them with diluted sugar soap first?How strange that it peeled off! You could try wallpapering them. There are some fantastic wallpapers available now. This would also make the doors appear flat instead of the dated routed out groove around them. You could also attach a false door to the existing out of a very thin material if necessary or replace the doors.

I have the shellac Zinsser as a spray - I think it is oil based. I did not wash the shelf with sugar soap. To be honest, I did consider replacing the doors and then colour matching the body of the wardrobe to the door.

I would try cleaning the doors thoroughly with sugar soap and allowing it to dry properly before applying the primer. I have only used the oil based one in a tin applied it with a brush and never had any problems with it peeling off after drying. Its your call depending on your budget. Look at loads of images for inspiration and good luck with the revamp.

I removed the vinyl wrap and painted the wardrobe in Farrow and Ball Pavillion Gray matt. What is the best product to protect the painted door?

That looks really good, completely unrecognisable from your first pic. I think you should look for a clear varnish to protect it. Using an eggshell paint for this type of item would have offered more protection. Do a little test first of the paint you have used with a clear coat over it to make sure that it works first. Another option is not to cover it as I really like the matt finish but keep a small pot of touch up paint and just fix any scratches or bumps as they occur.

I’ve just come across your post. We have moved into a property with 8 of these wardrobes. Would you mind sharing your final process for preppin? Did you stick with the zinsser primer after sugar soap?
