When to engage a structural engineer

last month

We are in the very early planning stages (pre-design) of a full remodel of our converted bungalow. We aren't extending, but may want to remove some walls. We are trying to figure out at what point to engage a structural engineer, as we are aware that their services can be expensive. Should we be engaging them before we have any concep planner/ space planner/ architect involved? Or is it best to engage a structural engineer after a concept designs have been produced?

This is a bit chicken and egg. I would get concept designs first but don't set your heart on anything until you have the structural advice as some reconfiguring may be expensive. This is my background and for professionals requiring professional insurance their services are not particularly pricey for the service. The structural safety of a building is really important.

We invited one for a structural survey during the purchasing phase and asked him plenty questions. Also emailed him a couple times during renovations, as we came across some things after pulling away ceilings and floors. Well worth the money, as it's basically just a small fee compared to a renovation budget, but speeds up planning and decision making (and peace of mind).

You can never go wrong with getting additional professional advice. As Isla has mentioned, it is usually a bit more cost-effective to get some advice only once the concept designs are completed, they will then be able to give advice based on the design as opposed to ideas

Echo this. We engaged structural after plans were approved which was potentially a bit late so would recommend to have advice as early as you have outline ideas/plans

I agree with the advice above. Do your planning first then use the structural engineer to work out how to achieve your plan. Being a bungalow you may well find that very little of the internal wall is “structural”
