yellow wooden floor

I bought some oak flooring but rather than the soft brown of the sample in the showroom it turned out quite yellow. What are good colours to help draw attention away from this? its going into the sitting room and a rather long dark hallway.

That's interesting, I've already got green walls, F&B pigeon. Perhaps I should wait until after the floor is down before worrying too much about colours. The cream sofas could be recovered at some point as well.

Is it already laid? If it is not what you ordered then you should have the right to return it. Was it an online purchase and do you have a psysical sample to compare to what was delivered? It might be hard to prove otherwise. Beware of disclaimers in the small print about colour variations, natural product, blah blah blah, If you are stuck with it you could white oil it to tone down the yellow rather than changing everything else to suit something you didn't order,

What I have always thought is, if you try to "match" an existing floor it looks like you tried and missed. When you go with something completely different, the result is yes, I wanted something different, and here it is. Especially if you lay it in a different direction. Does that make sense?

Hi Cherry, we went with the laminate throughout the house and it turned out absolutely stunning. To be honest it's such good quality I don't think of it as laminate and everyone who visits thinks it's solid wood. It won't look like laminate if it's a good quality brand and you use a thick underlay. Using it throughout the house makes the rooms flow and makes the spaces feel bigger. It's also really easy to maintain unlike shiny glossy tiles! Good luck!

It depends on the style of your fireplace Stephen - traditional looks more comfortable with a step. Modern you can more easily go with flush. Your photographs almost answer your own question.

I disagree. This is standard whitewood T&G flooring. It's generally laid across joists by builders on the first floor of two storey houses as a cheap subfloor ready to take a floor finish. I've seen it sanded and varnished / stained and while it looks OK for a few months, it doesn't wear well as it's a (very) soft wood and is very noisy, particularly in the rooms under. If you want a wood finish without breaking the bank, there are some good laminates that you can lay over the T&G boards. A semi-engineered board would be better but will cost a bit more.

Yes, unfortunately, a disclaimer says colours might vary slightly. Imagine this will come under that description, it's more than slight in my opinion but arguable. So, I will complain but don't really expect them to put it right. At the moment the hallways unpainted so all options open. The sitting room is F&B Pigeon. Not sure what range of colours might work best to diffuse the yellow tones.

Navy can look fab with a yellow tinged floor. Depends whether you like dark walls and have plenty of light.

The farther away you move from the floor in terms of Hue Family, the more you exaggerate the colour characteristics of it.

Colours from the opposite side of the wheel are likely to emphasise any yellowness most.

So selecting colours from the same Hue Family neighbourhood, or perhaps from just adjacent families would be the route to soften the look.

I would opt for grey then they might bounce off each other. Any warm tones will only emphasize the yellow tinge. Look for cool toned neutrals too many to mention. Navy blue if you have enough light does work well with warm oak. Typical about the disclaimer. I would also try and use a grey/white oil or protective sealant. A lot of varnishes will turn more yellow with time. If you are up for a more challenging finish but with a fantastic result then try Woca white soap like the Scandanavians do.

I would agree with Sonia and Isla, Deep navy or softer green tends to counteract yellow quite well - it just depends if you want something dramatic (ie., a navy sofa/feature wall) or less intimidating like sage green accent chairs. It also depends on what furniture you have already

I would wait until the floor is laid and then you can see how much of a yellow tone it has. Items allways look different once insitu. Very sensible to wait.

I agree with Marylee’s advice given you want to draw attention away from it. Once installed you might want to experiment with different lightbulbs too
