Exteriors Design Dilemma

creative visual thoughts please!

last month

We would like to redesign our front porch.
The front door does not open fully and the roof needs replacing. It’s more like a conservatory style as the brick work is single skin and the majority is windows.
We would like something a little larger, but consideration for the garage and style of house.
Do you think bricks or rendering?
Wooden front door or composite?
Flat roof or pitched?
If you have the ability to photo shop that would be great! If you have ideas and would like to be hired to design something for us please add a comment or message me! Thanks in advance!

I think a pitch roof is more attractive, and you certainly have the space for it. I rather oak porches which add a bit of rustic charm and can really lift the face of the house. I’ve recently had a composite door fitted and I love it. It’s very well insulated and has got rid of all the draughts we had with the previous wooden door. Mine is by Hurst and they do a fantastic range of colours including all the RAL ones. Have a look on their website.

Ooh yes, great idea Sonia! and what is nice about the pitch roof is that it can be created to match the design you are looking for. It is not a one-set-for-all. Also love a cottage style porch which is very similar, just isn't closed in on the sides which could be a nice option as well

Hi Janis Unfortunately I am not in the Boston area - I live in Ireland! Yes there are red items in 3 of the main rooms, the kitchen, sitting room and tv room (library) - although we have pared those back now and it's not as overwhelming. thanks for all your help everyone, i really feel like it's made a big difference and am excited to finish the tv room and then refresh the play room. do you think I should move the piano to the sitting room? and would the jazz painting work in the tv room? speak later, thanks!

The trim in your rooms is outstanding. To "tie the rooms together", the one thing I would do is install chair rail the same color as the existing trim. The horizontal lines of chair rail will move the eye around the room and into the next room creating a flow. Chair rail is relatively inexpensive, easy to install and would be wonderful compliment to your existing beautiful trim.

Hi snan - to address your questions: 1 - yes, the lamps work very well. With regard to the height of the larger lamps: do you know how high they would be? If the bottom of the lampshade is even with the top of the pillows that should work. If they are taller than that I think you will be okay with the smaller lamps. Look back again at some of the pictures above to see what I mean. The thing that will look odd would be if the top of the lamps were taller than your headboard. The idea is that when you are in bed reading a book that you want the light to be able to reflect down. As far as the lampshade size goes on the smaller lamps I'm thinking the shorter ones since they don't seem to drop down as far as the larger ones. 2 & 3-Definitely chair by the mirrored bedside locker with one white locker on the other side. Without question. The chair to the left of the bed gave the room life. Use the extra white one in a closet or another room. You don't want to overcrowd your room when you are going for a tranquil setting. 4-Absolutely okay to have bedside tables that don't match and look good in the room. Whether or not you like that is a personal preference though. I would only put the mirrored one next to the bed though if you have the chair next to it. It's how they play off each other that makes it work. If you don't keep the chair next to the bed then I would use both white tables beside the bed. It is also fine that the pictures are off-centre to the wall as long as they are centered to the bed. :)

You really don't have any color scheme going on in here. I do see a gold range so I worked around that. Here are some ideas of colors you could add . I'm not crazy about accent walls, but you do need to add color to at least one of your walls - be it intense or even just a tint of color: Sherwin Williams Jetstream Sherwin Williams Sprout Sherwin Williams Composed I also added in a white or off white (or you could do color) back splash over your stove and counters. Once you have some color then you can add window dressings. I suggest roman shades, which you can get in many patterns and colors. Then find some art work that compliments your new colors - check on art.com, Overstock.com or Wayfair.com.

Here's a visualisation I created for a porch addition and other upgrades to a house in Croydon. The front door is relocated and entrance hall is remodelled. Overall I think the porch extension creates a better articulation and refinement of the street elevation. An overall strategy for your house would help inform the new porch more cohesively.
