Bed position /which feature wall and fit storage in ?

Finally built our second guest bedroom where our old dining room was and now have a wardrobe to the main bedroom (thanks everyone who helped with that previously!)

This is the built size now (see image with the measurements on) and I was going to have it as an office with single bed that pulls out to a double for guests but we decided that we will convert our brick outbuilding into a home office at some point, so this can be mainly a spare bedroom and storage room. Also because it's really dark in the day and only gets the late avo sun and I can't work in a dark room but it's perfect for a bedroom.

Think either of these two bed positions would work but the one in the middle of the window seems nicer and less quashed but takes up more floor space overall.

Which would you choose??

Hi Tani. i guess it what works for you. Personally i don’t like things that look if they don’t work properly ie the bed blocking the wardrobe. Are you doing sliding doors on the wardrobe? I’m not sure how often it will be used but is a sofa bed an option on the window wall? If you went for the bed opp the wardrobe I’d add a small corner dressing table in the top right corner. Wardrobe to the ceiling and keep wardrobe and wall colour the same. Measure out all your ”craft” bits and plan shelves accordingly. You can get the lift up storage beds on legs which will make the room feel bigger. Maybe plug in bedside lights and shelves to keepthings off the floor

Consider combining storage and vanity space in an alcove. Then storage space in the form of a rack on the wall free from the bed. More details about the dressing table: make it built-in in the same way as the storage space (as the general design), while moving the table itself to the wall and making it, for example, 65-70 cm wide (as you see fit), and occupy the remaining space on the right in the niche with built-in the shelving and + above the table up to the ceiling will have deep storage sections. Under the table there is a pouf, for example (it slides completely under the table without interfering with the use of storage). And yes, it’s better when the bed is not close to the wall with a niche.

Adding width BEHIND THE BED - with a headboard (which doesn't have to be a "headboard"; it could be fabric, collection of mirrors, collection of pictures, a farm gate!, small chairs or stools) across the entire width. Matching bedside tables/bookcases/chests/ with LAMPS - useful storage for extra books, extra bedding, etc. CURTAINS always warm up a room. People will always feel colder away from home - provide an extra blanket or duvet to add to the bed. I notice there is no WARDROBE. Not really necessary for overnight guests (provide hooks on the back of the door) but useful for storing your out-of-season coats, etc. There is plenty of room behind the door. Buy one on eBay and paint it to suit your colour scheme.

Hello nicnoll, Another idea could be to have a wall light that is all about the bulb! A few links to both ideas.... Copper is good too... Or you run them in loops across the ceiling to the opposite wall and have a wall light fitting but the electric cable comes from the one ceiling point. So less to do wiring wise.. Hello Houzz Ireland, We are currently renovating a 1960's build - so as you know, there is a lot of decisions to be made!! So it would be nice to get some gems of advice from the experts to help us through this daunting task. Areas where we would really like some inspiration for - small bathroom downstairs. I would really like to do something fun with this room and although small, I think it could work really well with some funky wallpaper or possibly tiles?! I'm just not sure what to do with it. Also - pulling a whole house together?! Where do we start? We have the bigger pieces of furniture but how do I know what nest of tables goes best with a suite? Or what accessories will bring a room together? I'm due a second baby in 2 weeks time so any help at this stage would be so amazing - to guide me on the right interior design path for our new house. In the main I agree with Patricia. I would move the dining table to the living area, move the living area to the kids room, move the island a little more to the right so it is just a little more over than the width of the entrance walkway, at the moment it is more to the left and almost interrupts the entry flow enough to keep catching your self on the edge, with the table moved it will allow this, plus there may be enough room for more storage on the right hand wall decorative or practical and naturally shallower than standard depth, consider what it would be used for then you can make an informed decision on depth. The island sink and bin are not far from the tall unit pantry and fridge, so no I don't think they are to far away, whatever you get from these places are to be opened probably by the sink or bin, or opened to eat from the packaging. Also why would you have a log burner and an aga in the same room unless your aga is an electric one? They both give of tremendous heat, an aga is constant and unless you have planned for other oven types it will be year round so summer as well, as Patricia mentioned bare in mind how the sun transits your house, where it's position is when you will be in these areas which I'm guessing will be most of the time. I know plenty of people who gave had " improvements revamps etc" to their kitchen dining living spaces with plenty of regrets, loads of glass to bring the outside in, underfloor heating and an aga, the underfloor heating is switched off you can't zone it to where you want it, and the aga gives of to much heat with the glass combined, all the hard surfaces, no acoustics were considered by the so called "architects" sound is a problem too, something else to consider, someone else had to have some of their new kitchen change to make room for an air conditioning unit because of the heat, this is very expensive to run constantly, summers are almost unbearable, these things also affect materials being used such as leather and wood drying out and cracking/splitting. Hi Minnie!

I don't like things sticking out past furniture either with my OCD, haha. It would have to be made so the chimney looks wider and then the wardrone would officially start after the bed end.

Possibly re a sofa bed but it would slept on quite a bit when my OH can't sleep so want something comfy he can just crawl into or I can sleep in without having to pull it out etc at night,

Gas lift is good idea though as lots of storage in that then!

Thanks Tachch, yes I didn't consider having it in the alcove but that is an option as well and building up over it as well. could work. Then maybe Kallax style storage with drawers on the other wall or something similar.

Yes, you can assemble storage spaces based on Kallax, but I would build it up to the ceiling and possibly from several different (color and size) sections. But you need to understand what your style/design will be. Maybe just white will be enough. And the stairs to them)

I'm going for a sort of black/white palm tree wallpaper on the main bed head wall (wherever that will be? LOL).

and paint will either be something like a setting plaster (because it's east facing but has a building in front of the window so dark in the morning/day and wanted a warmer cheery feel to it) all around(?) or I just got a sample of the F&B Bancha which is like a mossy green but more vibrant. Thought it might work well with the black/white images of the palms.

I need to put a picture rail up though otherwise it will look odd with tall ceilings and no picture rail? especially with the feature wall.

not sure on furniture style but it's an edwardian house so I would prefer something with some panelling/beading on which I could always add. So probably not Kallax, LOL

Ok, so me and the OH have been having a measure and a mock up and we think that perhaps the best position for the bed - which may be controversial because of the radiator being there, but under the window. ) ?

There is about 700mm at the end of the bed that way (maybe 750) and around 700 to the chimney breast if we do it this way.

Where to fit in a dresser/small wardrobe (or clothes hanging space) and the storage above in the alcove though in this window option as it only leaves that alcove for everything?

AND

Which wall to decorate as a feature wallpaper wall in the above theme??? Perhaps the chimney breast as you see it when you walk in or in front of the bed? then have a dark colour on the window wall behind the bed and pale either side? OR..

Hi Tani. The bed could work there if youdon’t mind it blocking the rad, it’s always nice to see the front of a bed when walking in a room. Tb, i would try the bed out first in the room before making any other decisions. Is the window to size in your image?

Hi, yes pretty much to that size. Just fits a double bed within it which was handy so it doesn't look as odd.

So i really like your wallpaper but it doesn’t sound like it will work on the window wall.

Have you thought about having a different wallpaper on the ceiling? If not a darker paint colour on the ceiling should ”correct” the rooms proportions

Or look for a duvet cover similar to the mural?!

Or (over to the creative person on here to work out how to do it!) paper the chimney breast and wardrobe!

Nice pics! Yes that mural I found is not the one I was going to do - mine was busier so it wouldn't look as bad on a smaller wall. It's a b&Q one. Just a b&w palm leaf and nature one I fancied.

I could do the chimney wall and wardrobe although the alcove would need to have a dressing table in there as well so not sure if it would look odd.

Eek don't fancy papering the ceiling though 🤣😅 it was bad enough just painting it! Ha ha.

what sort of colour for the ceiling do you think then?

I've never thought about doing that. Guess it would work rather than putting picture rails up or one of the over?

Tani, im confused so are you trying to combine a wardrobe and “dressing table” within that 106 alcove?

You could stick to a plaster colour for the ceiling, this is by P&P library and comes in 5 shades

Yes so..

if we had the bed in front of the window then it would only leave about 700 at the end of the bed and chimney so it wouldn't fit in a dresser there unless it was super thin, (possible I guess but the stool would stick out still). No choice but to put one then in the alcove with storage above it.

Or we go horizontal under the window (see the two pics I updated in my main post to make it easier to compare them) which isn't as nice and leaves maybe 600 in front of the alcove and gives us more space to the side for a table and shelves.

that plaster colour is nice. I did get a sample of F&B setting plaster but it's a lot brighter than that one. Less dusty rose and probably not dark enough

Ah ok, so something like this with a stool?

Setting plaster can be quite peachy/bright. I’ve got it in a dual aspect (south and east) bedroom. I spent ages looking at samples where the south light hit as was concerned and thought it would be ok but got it wrong!

Yes the setting plaster does look quite peachy pink in this room. The trouble is, I always go with just white and maybe one dark accent colour like Off Black or Railings but I think this room would look nice with some colour in it (argh). I have quite an aversion to colour it seems, haha

So is the dressing table for guests rather than an extra workspace for you? If for guests, why not have a mirror and fold down shelf inside one of the wardrobe doors? If there’s room on the side of the bed have a stool that can be moved and used for getting ready? Alternatively have a small stool at the bottom of the wardrobe. You’d obviously need a plug socket and probably a light inside the wardrobe. Just thinking you’d maximise storage. i would also look at the storage bed as before and have a wall light by the bed to keep the stool free of anything to make moving it easier

You do like a plaster colour though!!

Yes you are right, it is really just for guests now as I won't ever work in there. I need light in the day and already use the conservatory as I didn't want to sit in that room, haha.

I will have a play around with it then and see what works where. Maybe get a second coat of white on for now and put the bedframe in so I can see what looks better. Just I wanted room to decorate before putting all the furniture back in again.

Hi Sarah,

We did our last guest room under the window and I know it's not the norm but it's the only option if we want both sides to get in and out without crawling over each other and have some sort of side cabinet (even a tiny one). I know it looks like there is space in on the 210 wall but because the entrance door is angled, I think the bed against this wall would end up being pushed against the window wall anyway.

So that's why I was thinking head against the window really.

well not necessarily - always open to suggestions if I have missed something obvious.

Personally I prefer the look against the window but it doesn't leave much space to have storage in the rest of the room so is it really an issue for guests to have the bed against a wall (if you know what I mean)

ie am I trying to make it look too nice rather than being practical and thinking that I could get a double against the bed wall and have more storage space then on the right side as you walk in.

What do you all think for guests? I mean i've only had one person staying over and that's my sister and she has slept on the sofa so doesn't care, haha.
