Exteriors Design Dilemma

Ugly house Great location

Thinking of buying this house but don’t like the outside appearance. No one on the development has changed theirs, but it needs something (apart from knocking down) Any suggestions? Thanks

I don’t mind it. So I urge caution as I think when people make cosmetic changes to a house they can adversely affect the streetscape by loosing the cohesion.

So I would embrace it and tidy it up. This means clean and widen the driveway, perhaps even change it to a higher quality finish such as block paving.

For me the porch glazing is dated and replacement would be good.

The side is a bit boring you might investigate if adding a bay window to the side is possible.

Agree it's not the most attractive house I've ever seen. It depends on how much you wish to spend improving the curb appeal. You also live in your house so you would not be looking at it that much. If the houses are similar then you need some stand out features were you ever to sell at the same time as some of your neighbours. As you have similar properties around you be very mindful of overspending in relation to the ceiling price. I think you could start with the porch area.

I really like the second one, but if you really like the wood panels then suit up for creativity - you can easily have the best of both worlds. Clear your wall at home and put the wooden panels there, you can then install the mantel on the panels just like in the second picture. Hope I helped :) Best wishes xoxo

I would use plants to brighten the space. The hardscapes are all good, they just look a bit naked and grim. It can be hard to make a space pretty but usable for the kids too, but its not impossible. You have a lovely sitting area to enjoy. Plant some lovely feature bushes in that gravel area. You don't need to completely hide the clothesline, but having something pretty and showy in front will create a boundary and the eye will be drawn to the plants instead of the washing. If you can't plant into the soil there, some large size pots will work. Maybe some medium sized (1-2metre) ornamental trees in pots, like citrus, a weeping ornamental cherry, or bay trees, moptop robinias are nice too. They will be compact. You could cluster some pots of herbs underneath or plant them and let them ramble a little. Herbs like thyme and rosemary and lavender will suit the gravel area and the heat and be hardy with kids playing around, the odd bike falling on them or crushing underfoot would be quite okay. bulbs in pots or planted around the edges of the lawn are great value low maintenance and hardy colour. You can get great seasonal variation in your view then. Online bulb stores like tesselar and garden express sell bulk landscaping bulbs at very reasonable prices. You can get hundreds of bulbs for $30-50. Bulbs are great hardy plants that won't be killed by the odd soccer ball either. The flowers may get knocked over or the leaves, but the bulb is safe under the soil. Cheap and cheerfuls like nasturtiums are good value colour that will self seed every season. Also, plant some very bright flowering shrubs behind the soccer net and against the far wall. Maybe some hibiscus? You need something to catch and entice the eye, plant some large flowering shrubs with larger or bright flowers or foliage you will be able to appreciate from a distance.

I have to agree with nudejude regarding the upholstered furniture sizes and positions. The room looks long and narrow, so placing 2 chairs or a 2 seater sofa opposite another 2 seater would allow you to enter through the door and walk, unrestricted, through to the opposite end of the room. An area rug between the sofas, large enough to fit under their front legs and perhaps a clear coffee table in glass or Perspex between would make a great conversation area. There may be enough length to the room to use a console table behind the sofa nearest the double doors with 2 small occasional chairs. A pair of lamps would provide light for the sofa and for the chairs. If the chairs are needed, they can be brought into the main conversation grouping. A Roman blind, with or without the curtains, would set off the window. Throw cushions in a variety of patterns and colour, will add interest to the upholstered pieces. Good luck and enjoy your home.

A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.

It’s not that bad. But I agree with Isla that the porch area doesn’t sit well with the rest of the house. I would look into changing the front door and side glass, maybe change it to more in the middle with a glass panel either side? Then choose a colour you like whether it’s classic black or something brighter. Have a look at Hursts or Solidor for some nice ideas. I would also remove the tatty grass and extend the drive round, leaving a bed for planting around the tree. A small patch of grass out thr front is always a pain to maintain.
