shading an oddly shaped patio in an awkward space

Hi, I have a problem shading an oddly shaped patio in an awkward space (dimensions below).

In the day sun comed from above and right side of diagram has some natural shade.

But late afternoon to evening the sun comes in sideways from garden to patio making it very difficult to shade. Have considered different shades, sails, gazebos buit nothing seems to quite fit.

We do not want to have a permanent side shade here as this would block the nice view of the garden that can be enjoyed earlier in the day.

Please can you let me know if you have any ideas that may help us solve how to use this space. Any suggestions would be well appreciated.

Have you considered sails? Kookaburra do some great colours. You would need posts but very easy to unclip the carrabinas when not required. Could be fixed to the wall too, just needs an anchor. I also have a western aspect late afternoon sun nightmare. Another option may be to plant some screening bushes that don't grow too huge in line with the outer edge of the patio. They would provide shade but maybe all day instead of the late afternoon. A parasol is a non starter. The shade is not where you need it to be at that time of day. You could also have a hazel or willow screen with an entrance along the edge of the patio.

I think you need to look for a bespoke solution made to fit the space, such as a pergola, rather than off the shelf products.

Mary, I am very glad to hear from you. I think of you often. It hurt me terribly when that unthoughtful person said what she said. I can only imagine how it must have hurt you. I would love to see how you have decorated for Christmas. I am almost certain there are differences between how our 2 countries do it. What an awkward space! The door opens into the room where the hearth juts out, making it even narrower. In an ideal world I would want to make the fireplace smaller (a flat hole in the wall with no hearth) and change the door to open outwards. However I'm guessing they may not be options! You need the room to work in 2 ways, one as a cosy space for the adults in the evening and the other as a larger clear space for the kids during the day, a tough call! I would consider dividing the room into 2 defined areas, one for kids and one for adults. The adult space should be at the window end and mean moving the TV to the other side of the fireplace. The sofa could go under the end window and 2 chairs either side. This will be a tight fit, would you consider buying a new L shaped one in a more compact design? This could sit by the radiator with a chair opposite. A rug and coffee table would further define this space and make it feel cosy. At the other end, you could place your toy storage behind the door, (maybe invest in some more!) and then bean bags could give the kids some seating for watching TV and playing games. The TV being freestanding could swivel according to day/night position. I hope that gives you some ideas, I'll try to find some photos to illustrate what I mean! Good Luck!

The sink in the island is the way to go here. As Lampert Dias mentioned above, your island can be larger than drawn. I prefer the sink and the breakfast bar at the same height as pictured above, but some people like to step the bar side up to protect it from the sink. It is an option. You can put the pantry and refrigerator on either side of the wall or even split them up and flank the wall as long as the refrigerator door can open. I would take the opportunity for more storage or display and put a cabinet on the wall behind the breakfast bar. Consider using a shallower cabinet there like 17" deep. It could be like a "china" cabinet display piece or more pantry storage if needed.

I disagree with the above comments. If you're open to big changes, especially if you plan on replacing the fireplace, you could install a lower mantle, and install the TV above it on a swing arm. This way, the TV and fireplace will remain the focus in the centre of the room, while still being able to view the TV wherever you deem most comfortable on any given day. I think the oblong shape of the room would allow for a couple different seating arrangements. Looking at the second image (fireplace on the right), imagine a compact love seat with it's back facing the double doors. Across from the love seat, 2 accent chairs, backs facing the photographer. Add a coffee table of your choice, and you now have a conversation space in front of the fireplace that is also ideal for watching TV. Thinking about the space behind the love seat, closest to the double doors; a half-height, full-width bookshelf would be lovely along the right wall (left of the fireplace), or even a cushioned bench seat with storage underneath, or both! One orientation to the right of the fireplace, and one to the left. Behind the love seat you could place a console table with lamps and accent decor that would create a visual division, making each seating area seem more intimate and purposeful. Add a full-width, floor length set of drapes on either side of the double doors and area rugs under each seating area and Bob's your uncle!
