What can I do with my stairs to make it safe and not make it ugly?

Hi,

I have an unusual stairs design in my new build house. I am trying to figure out how I can finish it (without spending a fortune,) and not make it look ugly.

The main worry is the 'balcony' part of the stairs from the half landing to upstairs. One of the children could fall out there, so I need some sort of 'wall' (glass possibly).

But, I also need to finish under the stairs (this is the first thing you see when you come in the front door). And I dont want to fully close off the under landing area, as that is valuable storage. So I want to be able to access in here also.

This stairs design is a real disaster and now I am scratching my head as to how to finish it.

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated!

Lots of ideas....couldn't resist adding my two cents. i copied your photos and did a little cut and paste- it's messy, but hopefully gets the main idea across. i'd put your sofa in front of the large book case, chair by the fireplace, tv on the stand on the wall opposite the fireplace - so you can either look at the fire or the tv. Someone suggested using frames of one color for your photos - an inexpensive way to do that would be to spray paint them all a dark color-black goes with everything. Since your shelves are a medium tone wood, display things that are dark or light so that they contrast against the wood. Limiting your display items pallette to a few values usually helps to unify things. (I think that's why so many people want to paint the shelves or put inserts in the back to help your nice things read more clearly...some get lost). If you want to "splurge" -you may consider having a carpenter make a few solid tall cabinet doors to provide a visual break in the shelving. I'm showing 3 doors - 1 on the right side of the fireplace and 2 on the left to leave two open vertical shelves for display on each side - with things arranged to frame the fireplace as the focal point. To add some height to your big vases, consider stacking some books beneath them. Enjoy experimenting untill you get something you're happy with - good luck!

First and foremost we need to get you to declutter the space. Take and remove everything that you do not use on a weekly basis and store those items in the garage, pantry or closet. Once you have the room cleared you will have a better vision for what your needs really are. I would also remove the table and whatever is on the wall above it. There is a possibility you could use a smaller taller farm table as an island with a few stools that can slide underneath then add a few to the peninsula as well if you need that much seating in the space. My biggest pet peeve in kitchens is when the cabinets do not meet the ceiling. We all need as much storage space as we can get. The "display" area above cabinets is useless unless you have a fabulous collection of something to really show off. From your photo it appears you are only using it for extra storage. Perhaps you might find flush woven storage bins to use side by side for hidden storage (?) instead. Are you considering painting or staining your cabinetry and replacing counter tops? If so, you might want to consider a counter surface on the peninsula that hangs over on the side for added seating. Best of luck!

The way to get your own eyes on the issue is to start with a general clear out so you can really "see" your kitchen and "keeping" room. Box up and remove all the stuff - tops of cabs, counters, art on walls, fridge and floor clutter, photos, area rugs. Then dig into the cabs and the hutch and remove all the items you only use once or twice a year. Store those away from the kitchen so you gain more room in the cabs for items you regularly use. Is that a radiator on the wall by the TV? I'm thinking the hutch niche would make a great computer area with a built-in desk. Are there any other doors into this room and is this your only living room? What size is the window at the table? Are you up for more than rearranging things? Any construction you can do? Can you take more pix, comment here and attach images?

Thrift shops rule! You can pick up the practical stuff---tables, chairs, chests of drawers, and even upholstered items---and make them your own with chalk paint and slipcovers. Sometimes you can find attractive art. Lamps are also super cheap at such places as the Salvation Army, and you can paint those, too. Chalk paint can be used indoors, as it requires no messy sanding and has essentially no smell. I think you'll also want a rug and curtains. If I were you, I'd use the greater part of my budget on a good rug or two that I could keep forever. Lots of people make their own drapes out of drop cloths, but Ikea curtains are a pretty cheap option. Good luck. You're going to have fun decorating your new place.
