Help please!! Is my unit too big?

Hey y’all! I need your help please. I bought this black sideboard as my tv unit as I really hate a small pesky unit. Do you think it looks too big and bulky for the space? I am planning to shorten the legs around 6/7cm as I do think it’s a little tall and I will have the tv mounted on the wall just above so will be a good viewing height however I think what’s throwing me off is the fact the unit will still be slightly taller the seat next to it! and the sofa! Please ignore all the work ongoing around and I have white foam at the feet just now until the furniture pads arrive to protect the floor. I can return the sideboard but I really love the design and the detail. Thanks!!

l like the unit but it dominates the space and looks very blocky. In my opinion, TVs are so ugly and black that the lower they are the better. A wooden unit that is as wide as possible and as low as possible would look better. In terms of how we 'see' things, black against white is the most dominant contrast and so no matter what is in the room, if the wall remains white the TV is the first thing you will see. This is why dark walls are very popular against large Televisions.

Just my opinion but perhaps something on the TV wall, or a tall plant on the floor next to the unit may help mix up the levels a bit and make it less obvious to the eye?

It is big but as K OB suggestions you need distraction. TV would be better where it is simply that if it is high up on the wall it can make viewing uncomfortable on the neck. Ideally tv should be at eye level or lower when sitting down.

Since you are keeping the flooring, everything new has to be in relation to the floor. Do you have a photo of the floor? Hold up samples of the cabinet paint and see if it enhances the flooring. You might need a more cream paint on cabinet and see these dark knobs. Some of the marble-type have many gray streaks. I'd look for something with brown-beige streaks to enhance the beige grout and beige floor tilehttps://www.houzz.com/photos/traditional-bathroom-traditional-bathroom-phvw-vp~93581 The back splash I'd do in the same "marble" as the counters b/c if you match the beige grout of the floors, with the subway tile, the back splash tile will look odd and if you use a white grout on the subway tile, it will look odd with the floors, too.

Hello Oris1978, What I would start with is painting the walls... Try a really lovely chalky cream.. Little Greene do a nice one called whitening.. It is bright and chalky and much nicer than a plain white.. Then get some nice roller blinds (for budget) Also in a light colour cream or white or something to compliment any flooring you might get... I see you don't want to spend a lot but I want to suggest a flooring. The tiles are not bad but if they are damaged then I would suggest a Lino. May not be exciting you think but when you have looked at the options from Sinclair Till, I think you will change your mind.. Images attached... There are many and I have chosen a few really fantastic designs along with a plainer one, so you get the idea. The floor space is quite big so make the most of that... Move the table and chairs further into the centre of the room... I'd even suggest painting them as well...Take the sofa out of the kitchen and move the other table to where the sofa is, if it's a table.. Can't quite tell? I'd place the items like toaster and kettle nearer so they are grouped together, thus more practical... Maybe invest in something that isn't white. I have to say one of the best investments for the kitchen has to be a Dualit toaster in Chrome! It's a style beauty! A good kettle to go with it and you're set. Dualit does a good kettle too I think it's called Architect? It too is chrome **If floor tiles are good then blinds to match in a sheer fabric not blackout as sheer is lighter and more subtle... The painting... it's lonely! Get something else or move it to a smaller piece of wall... It's really too small in that location... Box in the meter and those bits and all is neat, paint the same colour as the walls.. Voila! : ))

It doesn't look like the entrance door will open fully. Also, the console table juts out too far and the accessories seem out of place. I'd return it. Maybeputting the mirror on the wall with a shelf under it would work. Consider changing out the wood blind for a Roman shade or top down/bottom up shade. Personally, I wouldn't worry about covering up the rad. Add a pretty rug too.

Thanks so much for getting bsck to me, yeah i was thinking of putting a nice tall lamp behind the seat & possibly a tall plant like you say the other side to help.

i think you sre righht will help mix up the levels as everything else is low atm appart from the tv

I think a lower unit would be better. This ia an Ikea Besta TV bench which is 48cm high including the legs and available in lots of different options.

I like the side board. For me the problem is it’s too dark against the plain and pale wall and if that wall was repainted a mid neutral it would sit better. I agree that an oversized house plant (say 1.8-2m tall) would be super.
And if you are worried that the chair looks too low consider wrapping the feet for taller ones

I swapped my sofa legs for something longer as my sofa was far too low. A very clever solution and it needed Jonathan to remind me! There are lots of excellent furniture leg sellers online

In my opinion, it's less about the bulkiness of the unit but the colour as it's the only dark item in the room. Definitely worth working with the levels as mentioned above, but maybe also add a dark touch on cushions, artwork, decorations etc around the room so it doesn't look odd. Hope that helps.

I would recommend mounting the tv on the wall to balance the black and a couple of pieces on the unit to add interest such as a couple of picture frames and small sculptures. The plant to the side is a good suggestion something that links with the floor do a dried plant as opposed to a green leafy plant as that is too heavy on the eye against the black unit. A rug on the floor with a bit of black in the pattern will also help balance things and tie it all in..

You need a bigger TV! 😁 The ideal viewing height for a TV is for the centre of the screen to be at the eye level of the viewer.

I don't think the issue is the size of the unit but I do think the background is too flat. Maybe add a textured wallpaper (grass cloth or similar) or wallpaper with a geometric pattern, see images attached. Also add a large floor plant to the corner beside the door. Ideally the TV should be at eye level. Hope this helps. Good luck

It stand out as the room is featureless at the moment. I would remove the legs completely and see what it looks like without them. I’d also suggest getting some colour or a feature on the TV wall.
