indoor garden - thoughts?

I have a grim dark hallway in my house. Over 5 years we have transformed our home into a contemporary space and the hall and stairs has been last to be completed. As you can see, it is grim, dark, every tread cream, it has been replaced before (suspect 1980s) and the cupboard under it is musty and airless. Behind that cupboard wall is. Fabulous view of the South Downs.

I therefore am planning to rip out the lot, replace with an open tread staircase and put in a window in line with the 1st floor window, to open up the space and light. The flooring will replaced with tile.

I am looking to install an in-floor garden under that window, planted with houseplants.

However, I appreciate that it might not be to everyone’s tastes, so need to install it so I can easily cover when I need to sell the house on.

I include photos of the offensive staircase and the only Houzz example I can find of the type of thing I want to install.

Thoughts? Is this a dated idea? We viewed houses years ago build in the 1960s that had similar installed and the estate agent just suggested filling it in, while I thought it was pretty cool. My husband just rolls his eyes when I have mentioned it.
