Living room layout

I can’t work out how to make the best of this space - can anyone help?
Not marked on the floor plan is a 1.5m-ish fireplace / chimney stack on the “top” wall with about 1.2m to the right and 1.5m to the left, then the door that goes to the dining room/kitchen. The other door comes from the hall.
There’s currently a huge radiator taking up most of the “right” wall but we are considering making this a vertical one that goes to the left of the door.
We’ve just put in our furniture from old place as best we can at the moment but really want to make this room work hard with comfy sofa / tv area, play zone for young children and I would love a desk with space for my craft things.
Currently we have our two seater sofa and arm chair in front of the window with tv on chimney breast. I’m not convinced this is best use of space but can’t work out a better layout. Reluctant to put tv on “left” wall as it’s a party wall and partner also really doesn’t like idea of having sofa in middle of room - plus sofa there would cut into the sightline to the fireplace which seems weird.
Favoured aesthetic is mid century modern if that’s at all relevant and it’s a house built in 1950.

How deep are the alcoves and what’s the width of the tv and height of fire? if it’s a traditional fireplace then tv above isn’t the most comfortable?

I disagree with the above comments. If you're open to big changes, especially if you plan on replacing the fireplace, you could install a lower mantle, and install the TV above it on a swing arm. This way, the TV and fireplace will remain the focus in the centre of the room, while still being able to view the TV wherever you deem most comfortable on any given day. I think the oblong shape of the room would allow for a couple different seating arrangements. Looking at the second image (fireplace on the right), imagine a compact love seat with it's back facing the double doors. Across from the love seat, 2 accent chairs, backs facing the photographer. Add a coffee table of your choice, and you now have a conversation space in front of the fireplace that is also ideal for watching TV. Thinking about the space behind the love seat, closest to the double doors; a half-height, full-width bookshelf would be lovely along the right wall (left of the fireplace), or even a cushioned bench seat with storage underneath, or both! One orientation to the right of the fireplace, and one to the left. Behind the love seat you could place a console table with lamps and accent decor that would create a visual division, making each seating area seem more intimate and purposeful. Add a full-width, floor length set of drapes on either side of the double doors and area rugs under each seating area and Bob's your uncle!

Currently trying to redesign a living room and as it's quite a long and big room with loads of doors and we are finding it quite difficult. We haven't bought anything yet but I just done up a rough layout on a free website. There isn't a good are to put the TV and couch as there are double doors in the centre of the room. Please help!!

Hi there I’m building a new house and need to buy furniture as we are about 12-16 weeks out now. I have struggled with furniture layout as had originally been thinking of a corner couch in the middle or the roof so fire and tv would be visible when you sat down, but I drew it on floor in chalk and all it did was create a walkway around the couch with no real space for anything else - eg additional chair at the back end of the room etc. Felt to me like a waste of space and no function. I seem to have a lot of window and not so much wall to work with and as the ceiling is vaulted at the end where I have the fireplace seems to me would be odd not to orientate the furniture towards that view! I’ve drawn an alternative option in a programme I found online which I set out below with some pictures. The ceiling is vaulted to about 4.5 metres or so at the wall where the plant is in the picture below. Inset fire on that wall and tv on wall opposite over a sideboard. Any suggestions / improvements would be greatly appreciated- many thanks I’m advance!

Hi Rebecca, Congratulations on your new home. I have quickly sketched out the floor plan of your room in 2D and 3D. For the first option I placed the 2 seater in the window alcove, however I dont know the height of the window so this may not work if it is a large window as you dont want the furniture to obscure the window. Yeah I agree with you Minnie! At the moment it’s perched on a bookshelf in front of the fireplace on the hearth but we’d like to keep the fireplace so it will have to go higher. There’s no mantlepiece at the moment (and I’m happy for it to stay that way but it will look odd if it’s too low on the stack so that is worrying me too about a comfortable viewing experience). The chimney stack comes out about 30cm and the hearth is another 30cm. TV is 42 inches I think so fits well across the chimney stack at least!

Not sure I understand your space correctly, but I would try something like this:

This gives you a cosy arrangement with a walkway outside the core of the living room, you can still enjoy the fireplace, and you get a view out the window from the sofa.

Oh, and I meant to say that the party wall could be a good spot for desks and/or storage (bookshelves, cabinets), if you needed more of that. It would also create some buffer with the neighbours.

That’s a good point! Might be space there for playing or crafting too. Radiator needs to go either under or to one side of tv but I’m defo going to try this. I came up with this yest too (but involved eventually buying a new sofa) so might try a couple of different ways temporarily for a few weeks each…
