Think pink? Exterior paint colour dilemma

We need to paint the exterior of the north-facing mid-terrace to the right of the yellow house. In the shot it has a blue door which is now white UPVC, as are all the window frames. The pipes and fascias will be black. The garden is south facing and it's one row back from the sea on the North Wales coast.

Our dilemma is: do we play it safe and stick to lighter tones like creams, whites, maybe Dimity by F & B which is a very very very pale pink. Or do we go a little bolder with a stronger pink (maybe Setting Plaster by F & B) or pale blue?

How gorgeous is your neighbour’s yellow? However, I think multicoloured rows of houses look all the better when none of them are the same! Blue always looks good with yellow but my favourite is pink. This is a terrace in my town which is just lovely.

Personally, I would go pale pink or peachy, something with a little more warmth and vibrancy. A neutral between the pale and yellow might look a little insipid whereas a warmer colour would complement the yellow and make the terrace colouring look more considered.

I would go for a stone colour so not too dissimilar to what you've got. Little Greene does a good stone colour too but will work out a bit expensive. This is Oxford stone by farrow and ball. If you were doing the windows and front door then maybe an old white with door and windows in french grey

Hi Kate, you may not be allowed to plaster the dash as sometimes house fronts are protected. For colour try Indian yellow from Farrow and Ball. This strong colour is associated with your style of house and has the advantage or drawing the attention away from the dash and onto the lighter colours. ie. windows and doors. To save costs Farrow and Ball colours can be mixed into other branded outdoor paints.

we have a santa barbara style house in Arizona, it's about 3,000 st ft but tall ceilings.......we need to paint it (three exterior colors; wide/big fascia, body, and big pop outs). the roof is a cement tile sort of sunset/slightly orange sandy light color and the house has three sets of 4 'pipe vents' up high, same color as the tile roof). I am trying to get a......Spanish -ish look; dark brown big fascia, soft/creamy white-ish (but not boldly bright white), and some....color for the popouts toward the bottom. My thoughts are so far: Sherwin Williams 'Rookwood Dark Brown' for fascia (but I'm afraid it has too much 'red' in it??no idea), and S.W. 'Canvas tan' as the body, and S.W. 'Balanced Beige' for the (kind of big pop outs). FRONT DOOR: S.W. 'Iron Ore'. OR: S.W. 'Well-Bred Brown' or 'Plantation Shutters' for the fascia 'Accessible Beige' or 'Shitake' for the body, and 'Tony Taupe' or 'Taupe Tone' OR: because of HOA....... Dunn Edward colors: Metal Fringe for my fascia (which I'm afraid of because it is a bold wide fascia), Barnwood Gray or Pewter Patter for body, and, Fine Grain or Pewter Patter for popouts. and of course....I need to get done asap but I'm having a hard time with the colors. (I don't think the Dunn Edward colors will look right with the rood and pipe vents but not sure if I'll be able to pick the other SW Colors that are more of a warmer/creamier tone.

Hi Jo, first of all, I'd be looking to understand what all other colours are there in the street/area, as I'd still want to tone in. The neighbour's yellow is quite a cold looking tone in the picture, though that might just be the light. For inspiration, I'd have a look at images of Austrian & Swiss cities - Salzburg or Innsbruck, say - as I have always found their paint colours to be warm, vibrant & inviting without feeling garish.

Warmer yellows through peach, pinks and even bolder greens & blues are all possible - I don't think any of the testers you've used are quite rich enough, but that is just me!

Appreciate those suggestions @Caldicot Kitchen & Bathroom Centre The town is 'muted' overall, I'd say but we get an incredible coastal light and I'm sure it can handle stronger colours. I agree the testers aren't hitting the right notes. The house is in the centre of the terrace and there is part of me that wants it to be a little more attention-grabbing.

I don’t think your house has to relate to the rest of the street since no precedent has been set (so if they were all pastel colours then you would no doubt follow the theme).

My preference would be a stronger colour and I think since a lot of the render on the street is quite dark you could paint your house in a dark or strong colour.

I don’t like the brown as it’s a very drab colour. You need something to make it stand out. l am a yellow lover. However green or blue would look good.

@Jonathan the street is gradually getting some attention; I LOVE the idea of a confident darker colour, too. Planting at the front and maybe window boxes will soften the look. Thank you so much for taking the time to add images, thats super helpful

Your house and the house next door will form a unified palette, there is no avoiding that, so to a certain extent you have to factor it in. Anything too muted and neutral might look a bit dirty next to their cleaner yellow so I would opt for something that is equally clean and bright or something such as a clean white. I would personally avoid dark blue as I don't think it will work next to the yellow. I would consider a pinky white, a lilac or a pale pink.

The terrace in Sonia’s town are lovely, the colours all tone and the white frames around the windows and doors link them together. They remind me of Neapolitan ice-cream and would be very appropriate for the seaside.

@Jo McCarthy, by all means go that bit bolder - you might just be the catalyst that inspires the neighbours to go that bit further! I'm a big fan of colourful, painted streets - it can really lift an area and make it all so much more desirable.

A few more tester pots required - and go for those bolder shades! You can always tone back a colour with extra white paint if required...

@Juliet Docherty love your name! Our seafront here in Criccieth is full of colourful houses but our new street, which is one road back from the seafront, is yet to catch up. Maybe we are the trendsetters...definitely veering towards Setting Plaster by F & B or similar

@Sonia great images thank you for sharing. Our litte seaside tow has pockets of vibrancy and colour, so maybe us and our neighbours need to be the ones to start it on our road ;-) Thanks so much for the encouragement. We're thinking setting plaster by F & B might work well

I'm not quite convinced Setting Plaster would be right, it's a lovely colour but it might look too dirty and peachy next to the yellow, perhaps a cooler pink or a pale lilac? Definitely worth testing lots of options,

I agree with colourhappy. I love setting plaster as a colour but it's a bit too nude than a fresh delicate pale pink to lift the vibrancy of the street.

You guys are so helpful, thank you. I failed to say we need to get the go-ahead from other freeholders, too. I love the bolder shades, which we see a lot on our seafront here, but our street is definitely a calmer, more subdued section of town ;-)
