Is a roof lantern worth it

How much light will a roof lantern on a flat roofed extension bring to the darker inner room behind the extension?

Existing Flat roof extension is 3mx3m, south facing, windows on two sides.

Inner room is also 3mx3m with no windows and is generally quite dark.

There is a 20cm deep beam protuding below the ceiling on the boundary between outer extension and inner room, which would presumably stop at least some light getting from a roof lantern to the inner space.

Just wondering if it would actually be worth the money of adding a lantern, and im a bit worried about increasing solar gain…

It depends as much on what is around you (buildings, trees etc) as the location/orientation.

Costs of roof lanterns, fully installed, are not cheap, and the amount of disruption not insignificant, depending on how the roof is constructed.

Any time you add such a "penetration" gives an additional potential leak point for your roof. While we are involved with installations with such features, usually it is only done when the roof is being replaced in full, or an extension added.

Other options to consider are light tubes - or just really excellent feature & mood lighting. While there are ongoing running costs, you have to get through a lot of electricity & bulbs to get close to the cost of your roof lantern!

The rules may have changed but when we built our extension the wall adjoining our neighbour had to be completely within our own boundary. It looks as if your neighbour has continued along the party wall and therefore half the depth of the wall is on your land. It might be worth getting a chartered building surveyor to check it out as otherwise it may cause difficulties when either you or your neighbour come to sell. If I'm wrong about this maybe a professional on here could correct me. Other than that I think you should make the best of the little private courtyard it has afforded you by using plants in pots and climbers to soften the wall.

Depends how many you have. If you have half a roofs worth then sell them. If you only have a few you could cover a table top or just use them as table mats. I also like a neighbours water feature where she had two pools at different heights and the water spilled over slate from the higher one into the lower one.

Do not paint the brick!! It's part of the homes appeal and its style. Change up the stucco color to a warm gray as well as paint the fascia boards a more appealing color also (deeper charcoal or similar) a grayed green would be another option for the stucco. As long it all works with both the roof shingle and the brick these are colors worth looking at. Another option for just the gable end would be cement board shingle (Hardieboard or similar) if you want a change from stucco.
