Design HELP Required - Ground Floor Ideas/Improvements on zoning!!!

Hi there - we are in the process of designing our ground floor extension - we've come up with a few ideas on the Kitchen, Dinning and Living Spaces.

Looking for some additional suggestions - how we can optimize the space to have a good size island (current Island design is 2.2m), 8 seater table, and comfy tv/chill space for the kids.

Looking for creativity and good flow across these spaces - any advice how best to reconfigure the entire space?

We are mixed on Kitchen Space - being too compact and too much unused space near bi-fold! These are our initial designs - looking to get some advice and evolve the designs further...thanks

PS - there is a further first floor area which will be the master bedroom. Will get to that design later...

I would be inclined to have kitchen cabinets along right hand side as long kitchen with a Long Island.
Seating will remain in same position and dining table will move to the left corner opposite kitchen

Ideally you want 1200 gap between worktop and island. Having the ovens on the other side of the kitchen from the hob is also not great. I‘d be inclined to spin the island 90°, have hob and ovens along left wall and fr/fz, pantry cupboard etc along right wall.

fragle0 ... congratulations on the new addition to your family. Have been following your lovely changes. You probably won't have time to work on the decor for a while. Just wanted to suggest that you try pulling the nesting tables forward to be more in line with front of the chairs & placing your floor lamp to the back of them. This will give a bit more light at night for reading in that area.Also switching the plant by the fireplace & the one on the corner by the sofa.

Hi Lisa, nice sofa. I had a red sofa for 10 years and loved it ( though mine was fabric) I've changed the kitchen/ living room and it stuck out like a sore thumb. I gave in and put in a grey leather sectional one and I must say it's much easier to decorate around. Are you in Ireland? Have you heard of the 1933 company, they have very nice suites. Red makes a big statement! Just my 2 cents worth, good luck!

I see what you mean, It's a good idea in theory, however, practically, I don't think it's going to work, and you will end up ruining the nicest room in the house. There are no walls that remain unbroken by doors or windows, so where are you going to put units and unbroken worktop space. They can't go on the left as there are three doors. There's a door on the right, which although you could put a unit and a bit of worktop back right, it wouldn't be very big, and the biggest run of wall goes straight down to the glass doors, so you probably can't and wouldn't want to go straight up to them. You could move the door into the hallway from the front end to the bottom end by the patio doors and this would give you a better run of wall. If you put an island in the middle, 5' into the room to give yourself room to walk in and gain more worktop, it'll only leave you with around 6' at the other end for a dining space. However, i'd still advise getting a kitchen planner onboard before you start, as i'm not convinced the room is big enough to achieve what you want with the available wall space, and it stands a good chance of spoiling a very nice and elegant entrance to a house. The other big problem is the plumbing, there isn't any currently in that room, so you'll need to dig up the floor for drainage and almost definately that of either the utility or one of the bathrooms! I vote for keeping the house exactly as it is!

Thanks Decoenthusiaste! Yes that sofa is unavailable here and hard to find anything similar in local stores, but I may have one made up! So yes I’m using the images you post as inspiration and hope to find similar items here, I also love the grey Scandanavian sofa ideas you had earlier, and will use them as inspiration to get a lighter replacement. The blind on my window is screwed in place, but I could easily replace it with something that would let in more light, like the top down blinds (which are new to me!). I’m really glad no one has thought the absence of curtains an issue, as light is scarce here & I prefer the no curtains look. I do agree we should move the car to another part of our drive to get a nicer view out. A radiator cover that could double as a shelf would work well I think, I love the bespoke one, how cool! Also good to find out that you can get ones that allow the heat to rise. Re the music centre, I might replace with an iPod doc with speakers as Glo kindly suggested, In meantime I might cover it (and the dreaded TV!) with a piece of framed art leaning from the floor, aware that’ll be another competing focal point, but hopefully a nicer one! Thanks a lot for the tip re dimensions for a piece of art over the sofa and a coffee table, both of which are on my list to get, I would’ve had no clue re this and it’s fantastic to discover that there are certain rules which, if you apply them, can make your room work visually! Thanks again for the brilliant advice, I really appreciate it.

I offer an alternative because I think the current long living room is difficult to furnish and if you followed your plan the small sitting area near the kitchen would be used alot and the main living space would then get under used. I also feel that the new room will be the biggest and most impressive in the house so you should have a better approach to it- so have a reception space open to your hallway so the hall feels oversized and grand and add double doors to the new room.
The front part of the current lounge could be a gym if that’s what you need- I suspect you will have an additional TV space in there

Hi Nitul,

I agree with some of Jonathans points above. The plan you have creates a very disconnected lounge, it seems likely to become underused if at all. But it represents a large floor area. Also the entrance feels very blocked. It's not really clear though what spaces you want and how you would like to use them, so it's not possible to design a space that would work for you without that information.
