garden fence dilemma

I’m not keen on the garden fence that we have and share with our neighbour. I would like to put up our own fence panels but they would be a different style to what is already there and therefore would look weird for the neighbours on their side as our panels would cover the gaps at the top of their fence. Our neighbours haven’t been very forthcoming since we moved in so not sure if this is something I have to approach with them or could just go ahead with buying our own fence panels. However I do feel torn as I wouldn’t want it to look like an eyesore from our neighbours point of view. Any help??

Sort your garden out firstly before the fence. Some decent planting will hide the fence

It’s a beautiful view. Who owns that fence? l suspect it may be your neighbours but could be joint?

It really is 😊 I spoke to the old owners daughter and she said she believes her parents and the neighbours went halves on the fence

It makes me cross that people think they have a right to make some quite negative comments on this post. Small Garden Ideas

Hi all, Looking for a few ideas on what to plant in different areas of a small garden. The first photo shows the front, the bed near the window gets a lot of sun in both winter and summer. I did plant wild flower seeds here last September but it was a bit late so only have the below. As it gets the sun I would like to plant flowers that would attract bees........any ideas? Also looking to plant 2 or 3 plants down the side of the fence........what would be recommendations? The bed by the wall doesn't really any sun during the winter and a bit in the summer. Was thinking the tree as there and adding a cherry blossom in the middle or maybe a bit closer to the gate. Good idea? The second photo shows the back, the plan was/is to put decking over half the grass and plants in the bed. What would you recommend for this bed? It gets no sunshine in winter but gets a lot from end of April to start of Sept. The third one shows another bed at the back that again only gets sunshine in the summer. Again what would be the recommendation here? And finally looking for somewhere in Ireland I can buy all of the recommendations online?? Loads of questions for any budding landscaper!! :-)

As l look out of my bedroom window l own the left hand fence, my neighbour owns the right. However my son shares his with his neighbour. It’s clearly stated on his plans. lt may be the case that you have joint ownership but l would check first.

If it is joint then l would speak to them and tell them what your preference is. Had the height been no different you could have just installed another fence in front of that one.

Why don't you paint/stain your side of the fence a dark colour, it would be less obvious and then plant against it so you don't see it?

I really like the fence on the right and it looks pretty good quality too. I agree with Sue, you could paint it if you wish but planting it up, as Ricky suggests, is the perfect solution. Plants can be so beautiful. Who owns what fence can be a minefield. There are no strict rules and if your property is an older one, the Deeds tell you nothing! Newer Deeds can show who owns which fence, but sometimes a polite chat with your neighbour explaining you want a new fence and did they mind would be a good idea. Most neighbours are happy to have a new fence for free!

The building/garage looks far worse than the fence, I’d sort the garden and that first, before bothering with the fence! While you are doing that I’d have a chat with your neighbours and see what they say about any changes to the fence, but in the end having easy relationships with neighbours is more important and plants in the garden will soon disguise the waves, although if you are thinking of just having a garden without plants in a border, you could still have some plants in pots, but not having to pay for a new fence will save money for the time being and hopefully there will be some strong winds in the near future which cause the fence to fall!

Your neighbours clearly like and maintain their side of the fence so tread carefully. They also seem to maintain their garden quite well. I agree with others that you should focus on developing the garden and maybe paint the fence. It’s quite nice and what a beautiful view you have 😀

Thanks so much! We have only recently moved in so we have lots of work to do in the garden (hence the mess) Will focus on the actual garden first and then look at the fence situation. Thanks all 😊

Hi Abbie I could be difficult to painting the fence as the top is a trellis, could you talk to your neighbour and see if they would like a darker colour, maybe they would agree if you offered to do their side as well.
