Could my kitchen be re-orientated?

This is a very silly question but I feel if I don't ask it, I'll never know for sure, so here goes. My kitchen is open to the conservatory - the reason I fell in love with the house - and both are reasonable-sized spaces that work well. My (daft) question is, is there any way my kitchen could be turned around so that I could face the garden while I cook. You'll see from the floor plan and photos below why its laid out the way it is so please feel free to laugh as you say no!

Hello. I think if, I were redesigning this space I would begin by looking at if this wall needs to be there. It looks like it may be a supporting wall with a lintel above the opening but it would be a good start if it could be removed without too much of an issue (increasing the gap)

When we work on our layout package, we then do scale plans to see what we can fit in but I would start by looking at either this... this may allow a double unit to come out from that wall to look out and would be opposite the door.

Or you could look at this... taking the units out from the left-hand side to allow for a walk way on the right-hand side.

I think I would start by having a builder over to look at what is possible in opening up the entry to the conservatory and the location of things like plumbing.

Thank you very much, Gina, that is really helpful. What you've actually done is reminded me that I'd like the conservatory converted into a garden room, with the opening opened up to the full width and height and the conservatory given walls, windows and roof lights. Sigh. A body can dream, can't they?! While I'm at it, I'd have the new floor I want throughout the downstairs, possibly with underfloor heating and throw in a new kitchen while I'm at it. Hey ho, perhaps I should buy a lottery ticket.

Seriously though, thank you again for taking the time to look at this.

Thanks for the explanation. Try a wall that is drawers up to waist high, cupboards above that. YOu can add pull-out cutting boards at waist height so that you can put things there when unpacking groceries and putting things away in the cabinets and drawers: Drawers will help but they will not increase storage space by a factor of two. You could also add drawers where the microwave is now and continue to keep the microwave on top. Here is another wall of wood cabinets: Although it will not solve your storage problem, I recommend that you pull everything out of the cabinets and drawers, one drawer or shelf at a time. Be flexible about storing things elsewhere while the children are very small. Or discarding "aspirational cooking" implements (egg slicers, orange zesters, martini shakers. lobster-shaped gelatin molds) that just haven't been used in years. Families with children tend to accumulate an enormous amount of plastic stuff. In six months or a year, they will need different plastic stuff!

Hi. Your kitchen to me looks large, certainly big enough for a table and maybe some seating (from what I can see in the pic anyway!). I personally wouldn't knock through unless rooms were small and needed space for furniture. I cook a lot and would hate the smell travelling, the noise and the mess etc. if the house has 2 living areas it's also nice for family members to have their own space at times. That's just my opinion though and what works for me and not you! ! Have you looked at pics where people have done the same thing with similar size rooms? Or is there anyone in the road with a similar house? Re paint, are you painting the units or just the walls? I would probably change the kitchen floor regardless if you knock through as its absorbing some of the light.

Thanks Jonathandb1972. That looks like a lovely layout I really like the open plan but our driveway around the house will come from the left side so that's why we had thought of addiing the extension to the right. I'm sure we could use your idea on the right side and it would still throw in plenty of light. Regarding the rooms: the long room to the right is the current kitchen which is currently very dark and cold, the small room behind this is the utility, the two rooms to the left of this are a front living room and back lounge. The rooms left of this are 4 bedrooms a bathroom, hotpress and outside toilet. Thanks again for all your suggestions.
