Kids' Rooms Design Dilemma Living Rooms

making a cosy games/ Netflix room

Not liking the flow of the current setup for the games/ Netflix room. Feels like random bits chucked together. Any ideas on how to address this? Would shutters work? Alcove shelves?

I also suggest shelving! We have a similar x-box room with similar corner sofa, and it always looked cluttered, so a few months ago we had cupboards and shelves made instead. Don’t look too closely because the finish is ropey in places, however it’s a big improvement!

It’s hard to tell from the photos whether the alcoves are deep enough for shelves but if they are I think shelves would look great. Shutters would work, a cheaper option being roman blinds. The rug is too small and i think a tv cabinet on legs or wall hung would make the room look bigger.

Consider a darker colours for the walls if you want a cosy feel. The room is really quite empty and needs art, cushions, lighting, accessories, plant, textures etc to make it cosy

Hi HU-223997027, as the room is used for gaming/Netflix's and you want it to feel cosy, have you considered going for a darker paint colour to give the room a dark and cosy feel? Adding cushions would add interest and texture. You could add some artwork to the walls too.

Hi Janis Unfortunately I am not in the Boston area - I live in Ireland! Yes there are red items in 3 of the main rooms, the kitchen, sitting room and tv room (library) - although we have pared those back now and it's not as overwhelming. thanks for all your help everyone, i really feel like it's made a big difference and am excited to finish the tv room and then refresh the play room. do you think I should move the piano to the sitting room? and would the jazz painting work in the tv room? speak later, thanks!

Simplify is always a good strategy with play rooms. The temptation to cover the walls with artwork and posters can add to the visual clutter. I would suggest a larger area rug to ground the space and create a soft place for playing on the floor. A medium colour with a fleck from other hues in the curtains and upholstery will help hide dirt and lint. I think you could definitely cozy it up with a warm wall colour to unify the space. Lastly, closed storage for the toys goes a long way to creating order from the chaos. You will have a lovely space the children enjoy and you find restful.

What an awkward space! The door opens into the room where the hearth juts out, making it even narrower. In an ideal world I would want to make the fireplace smaller (a flat hole in the wall with no hearth) and change the door to open outwards. However I'm guessing they may not be options! You need the room to work in 2 ways, one as a cosy space for the adults in the evening and the other as a larger clear space for the kids during the day, a tough call! I would consider dividing the room into 2 defined areas, one for kids and one for adults. The adult space should be at the window end and mean moving the TV to the other side of the fireplace. The sofa could go under the end window and 2 chairs either side. This will be a tight fit, would you consider buying a new L shaped one in a more compact design? This could sit by the radiator with a chair opposite. A rug and coffee table would further define this space and make it feel cosy. At the other end, you could place your toy storage behind the door, (maybe invest in some more!) and then bean bags could give the kids some seating for watching TV and playing games. The TV being freestanding could swivel according to day/night position. I hope that gives you some ideas, I'll try to find some photos to illustrate what I mean! Good Luck!

If possible install an electric fireplace mounted on the wall for coziness. A big couch with lots of pillows and thick rugs. I also would install on one wall a build in bookshelf if there are no walls use the space at the door. Looks great build in and makes this room more separated from the rest of the house. Lots of books, magazines and board games if you have kids and there you go. Keep the colours calm and neutral on walls except the rug. Heavy warm colour to create your cozy nest. If you don't have walls in the attic place couch in the middle of the room as centerpiece. That should do the trick.

Dark walls would create cosiness. Maybe dark green or navy. A new rug to co—ordinate with the walls would be good. Shutters would be lovely but they are quite pricey.

Hi there,

Yes, I see what you mean. The TV looks a little lost, the low unit seems wide considering the limited amount on it, and the walls are pale.

If you are looking to make it a real "Netfix & Chill" space, I'd recommend pushing the envelope a little a going for a sort of mini home-cinema feel. Darken down the walls & curtains (deep grey blues are ideal for home cinema) and then put in a more specific media unit - I'll upload a pic of one in our showroom shortly.

This comes from a good British manufacturer and is nicely modular, so you can tailor to suit the space and your taste wrt colours of the unit & doors (all optional, dozens of colours & styles).

Here’s our tv room done in a cinema style that others have mentioned. I want to change the rug and add a few more bits but we love it 🙂
