Hi my living room looks awkward and I’m I don’t know why. I am planning to maybe add a small chair. Let me know what you think the problem is

Is there another position the sofa can go so it’s not blocking the doors?

if not, try pulling it away from the walls a little. The art doesn’t look right aligning with the top of the door, try lowering it just a few inches closer to the sofa. I’d also pull the plant out of the corner a little. Ideally the rug would be a bit bigger so you have a few inches either side of each leg but you could try pulling it out from the left a bit. Personally I’d also change the 3 lighter cushion for colour/pattern/texture

Everything is all one tone apart from the art and the coffee table. It needs some colour, doesn’t have to be bright shades, but adding more black or tan into the mix can help lift it. Art should ideally be displayed at eye level so bring it down a notch. You can add more colour/texture with cushions. Blocking patio doors always looks wrong so as suggested by Minnie move the sofas onto another wall if possible. Then adding some simple curtains will add cosiness. Adding some extra lighting like a floor lamp in the corner will add cosiness at night.

Hi, thanks for your comment. I totally agree - I actually have a large art print on order (vertical/ portrait orientation) and that will be replacing the mirror when it arrives. From previous comments I received everyone seems have different opinions on sofa choices but I think I'm pretty happy with the L shape one I've gone with - it fits the space a lot better (I think!) than the 3 & 2 seaters I previously had. I contemplated going with a different lighter sofa colour but practicality won in the end!

Thanks maumason I think you're right about the more vibrant pops of mustard yellow, and I definately need an area rug. I've photo of romans below, they're a charcol grey and the walls are a light grey. Blenheim I like your photos and do think white fireplace is nice with navy wall but I don't think I'll attempt to paint my marble fireplace! I do like that mirror in your photo and maybe something similar would look better than what I have. I think i've too much going on with the feature yellow on the fireplace and the canvas and perhaps why it looks out of balance. I think if I paintrd he fireplace wall light grey like the other walls, changed the mirror, and painted the wall behind the couch instead (maybe navy? Dark grey?) it might look more focused? I know sofa and chairs are a bit chunky and I don't love them, but will have to put up with them for another while. They are recliners and super comfy which is important for me though!! I do like my coffee table and tv unit, it's reclaimed pine and looks nicer in real life - perhaps it'l work better once I get my dream sofa!!

Personally I don’t think there is enough in the room…..I think you need more colour, pattern and texture which mainly means soft furnishing or wallpaper.

I think you should buy full length sheers or curtains to soften the window- I don’t think it matters that it’s actually a patio door- what we can see looks like a window.

I would probably choose a warmer neutral colour for the walls, lower the pictures as they are too high, add some patterned cushions …… and you probably need lighting at a low level which helps create atmosphere at night….. consider a side table with lamps at each end of the sofa

From my point of view:

Put 2 big or 4 small coloured cushions in that sofa. Or a coloured throw

Pull the rug as out as you can, that big sofa is asking for a big rug

Add some pale curtains at the back of the sofa to soften the view of the glass

Maybe switch the sofa round to the other side so along the back wall and creating more of a zone…. Maybe a display shelf with pictures.. maybe curtains? Nice space though!

Hi Yasmine Hadi, adding some accent colours would work well to contrast against the neutral or if you do love neutral then adding cushions and other soft furnishings with different textures would work too. You could opt for a larger rug too that potentially is a different shade to the sofa.
