Can I paint over existing paint on a wooden staircase?

My wooden staircase has existing old paint on the sides of each step and raiser. Probably, there used to be a central runner. Can I just paint over the existing paint (after sanding) or I need to completely remove the old paint first?
I am a first time DIYer, any answer would be super helpful!

Give it a good sand down and make sure you vauum off the dust. The key is in the preparation. If you’re using gloss paint then apply an undercoat first for the gloss to adhere to and give adequate coverage.

Yes you can paint over existing paint. Remove any loose paint, fill any holes, sand and vacuum to remove all dust. As Daisy says, the key is in the preparation to get a good finish. I don't normally apply an undercoat over existing gloss. Sanding is important to prevent the fresh paint from peeling.

Hello Shassad85, As Far as the description of the house interior. I can suggest checking out at Benjamin Moore Brand paint color: Soft Sand 2106-60 That's the paint color number. Other one You can check out is Portland Gray 2109-60, Hope this Helps

Who would paint redwood???? That's a total sin against the wood gods. Don't waste money on a premium upgraded wood like that if you want paint. Go with cheap paint grade poplar for half the price. And don't do cream paint to walk on unless you want to repaint every 6 months.

I am a fan of black as a disappearing colour! If the tha bannisters were painted black the Victorian look of cast iron would fit. The walls are too pale , would you consider a dark green( FB Green Smoke) under the rail, next to the carpet, and a much lighter version above( FB Light Blue or Pale Powder). Not really sure of the shade of green in the carpet, it might be more FB Oval Room. I am fond of the Pugin look but realise it is powerful and invariably used with very dark paints. We changed our ginger brown stairs, over 3 storeys to white. 13 years later the effort was not only worth it but the pain has subsided too!

Empty out the furniture and fixtures there, including the lamp and ceiling fixture.Use a storage bench instead for a place to sit and remove shoes. Shoes or backpacks can be dropped inside it. You can get much better lighting from a fixture that has lights to wash the ceiling and to light the floor. What is under your stairs? Do you have room to install some storage there? Pull out stair drawers might work for shoes, and you might add some pull outs under the stairs if they are suited for it. A foyer should serve to introduce you, your style and the decor to be expected in the adjoining rooms. I would key furnishings and paint to what is going on in the rooms left and right of the foyer. Everything I see hanging on the walls is hung too high. The general rule is that the center point of a single piece or a grouping should be 5' above the floor. If the first piece at the bottom of the stairwell is hung at that level, you can use painter's tape to tape the center line all the way up the stairs and arrange pictures above and below the line, with a few centered right on it for a more pleasant arrangement. Not knowing much about the rest of your home or your personal style, I might suggest you paint a soft color like Sherwin WIlliams Sea Salt.

Hello, The idea is to get to a final result as the picture on the right. On the left, that's my staircase. After removing the carpet, filling holes, and a bit of sanding, I realised that the old paint running along what I guess was once a runner doesn't come off. What's more, between the painted areas and the bare wood, the surface is uneven (because of the existing layer of paint). I would like to avoid stripping off the old paint and paint directly over it. Shall I try to sand it more? What would you suggest to get a good finish look ?

If you don't have one, might be worth hiring an electric sander to smooth out all the boards. You'll need to prime the bare wood too.
