Wall emulsion problem!!

Happy New Year!! I've recently painted my walls with a Johnstones matt emulsion - Ivy Sky. I love the colour and it went on quite well but it is showing every mark. I'm dreading taking down the decs as even brushing against the wall to open and close the blinds causes marks.
It looks like I'll have to repaint. Can you suggest other paints which don't have this problem please? I don't mind if it's not an exact colour match but I'll keep it on the dark side and would prefer as few coats as possible. Thanks for any help or advice.

How annoying for you, but I feel your pain. I painted my bathroom Denim Drift by Dulux in the bathroom version and it’s showing up lots of scuff marks and chips. However, my hall, stairs and landing is painted Farrow & Balls modern paint in Pigeon but that is doing really well, no scuff marks whatsoever. I think scuff marks do show up more on dark colours, do you think?

Thanks for that Sonia. I know it was a pre-Christmas rush to get it done so really frustrated now as i was exhausted!

Yes I think you're right, the dark colours probably do show more marks so I'd love to get recommendations of a dark paint that is less temperamental before I start again.

Thanks for that groveraxle - we might be changing the sofa in that room so I could possibly pick a different colour sofa next time so it's not so inline with the walls. That said I love how vibrant the mural is - does the brown wall colour make it look dull? Spoke with DH and there is no way he will go for the blue.

http://houzz.com/photos/3642990 This link kind of demonstrates the use of mosaics and the mirror idea I thought may be cool. Obviously they are vertical but I think it would work either way. Any pics of your tiles? I have seen your other post and know your suite is 'traditional' but another thing to consider I guess is the cost of the mosaics. £££ using lots may mean a big dent in your budget.

Neighbours extension wall

The rules may have changed but when we built our extension the wall adjoining our neighbour had to be completely within our own boundary. It looks as if your neighbour has continued along the party wall and therefore half the depth of the wall is on your land. It might be worth getting a chartered building surveyor to check it out as otherwise it may cause difficulties when either you or your neighbour come to sell. If I'm wrong about this maybe a professional on here could correct me. Other than that I think you should make the best of the little private courtyard it has afforded you by using plants in pots and climbers to soften the wall.

I’m a lover of Johnstones paint. Swear by it so I’m surprised to hear you have had problems with it. My local branch is very helpful so l wonder if a quick conversation with staff there might offer some ideas?

My cloakroom is dark green. It’s Velspar and have to admit it hasn’t gone on as well as my lighter Johnstones paints. Wouldn’t normally have purchased from them but just happened to be there in B&Q. Wouldn’t buy it again.

I used to like Johnson’s but when I decorated two years ago I felt the quality wasn’t the same as in the past (also their colour matching wasn’t great either). I would probably find a colour from Little Green and paint over the room.

I definitely recommend that you go to the local paint centre and talk to them because they can give good advice. Johnstones (and other brands) have several “matt emulsions”, so a more durable formula is probably available. I painted our downstairs loo and a wall in our hallway years ago in an off-the shelf navy blue Dulux heritage shade. It looked fab for the first week until it was touched, and then I had the same issue as you. I went to the local dulux centre and they mixed up the same colour in a more robust “trade” formula. It solved the problem, and 7 years later it still looks great.

Thank you all for the advice and suggestions. Sounds like I definitely need something trade quality or harder wearing. I can take my time this time and do a patch test with some of your recommendations as I won't be in such a rush to choose and finish it. I'll post any successful updates !!

If you use a scrubbable matt version of the paint, any marks can be wiped off without damage to the paint job - it’s very durable. You could get it colour matched in scrubbable matt.
