Water logged garden
We have a garden that is flat and we live in an area that is also without gradients, near the South Coast. Whenever it rains heavily, which has happened over the past few months, an area 2 by 3 metres down the far end, gets flooded. Not terribly deep, about 4cm and the beds have a trench we dug that fills.
We have 2 trees that need planting and that has been postponed until this issue is sorted out. If we simply cover with topsoil will that fix it? I suspect that we need to dig down and somehow get a soakaway?
Any ideas please.

We actually have some vintage cereal boxes that we are planning on displaying on the shelves (filled with cereal of course)!. Comments (0)Hi i'm having serious drainage issues with the bottom of the garden ..there is a path sloped down to a big concert shed with absolutely no drainage ..as we have a dog we often need to hose the area down any time we do water pools down around entrance to the shed. im think of digging up part of the path and putting in a french drain type with stones and grate on top ..Would this make sense..The oil tank is on the bottom of that path too so id have to be careful of the piping ...Has anyone any better ideas ??...See Moregarden help after renovation

The house is on a east-south-east - west-north-west direction, so we get the first patch of light in the bottom right hand corner, and the last of it on the patio in the evening. Id like a little seating area or something in that bottom right hand corner to go for a cuppa on a sunny morning. last yearWe’ve had so much rain lately. If your soil is clay, as Sarah has asked, then you need to dig in fine gravel and compost to improve the soil and aid drainage. You could also research which plants like boggy soil and plant those instead? Dogwood trees (Cornus Kousa) prefer a moist soil as do Gunnera but there are many others. If you look on the RHS website they will list suitable plants.

last yearlast modified: last yearThe borders of the garden could be lower than your neighbours side. This could cause water to run down the slope into yours.
You could create a raised flower bed - at least a foot high or more if possible. The plants will love the extra load of top soil, especially during winter. Keep it topped up to the max and the water will be absorbed instead of flooding the flower bed.
Pay attention to soil health. The grass is great protection against flooding too. Plants have strong root systems that will soak up a lot of water when it rains. Grass corner could need extra composting in as well as it appears to be in a dipped corner.

last yearWe had a similar issue and solved it by digging a trench, lining it with chicken wire and filling with stones. Works brilliantly and was relatively cheap. The area where the wheelbarrow is used to be a swamp when it rained.
