Garden and patio advise please

Hi everyone,

I finally have moved in, huraah .. thank you everyone at houzz specially Jonathan, Sonia and so many others.. god bless

Just got back and have two diy jobs left

Landscaping the garden/ patio and insulating the attic

This weekend it will be the garden, plan to hire or buy an electric compactor and compact the soil in the garden. Why you may ask?

Just that loose soil, specially in wet weather , is difficult to walk on and a mess

So will try and compact it, may buy some gravel and sand and add it to increase the compaction as well as a few diy paths.

Any ideas on this are welcome, as all I have are you tube videos , to guide me

Will also use Jonathan’s idea and make a mix of 3:1 sand and cement dry mix and sweep it between the patio slabs. Later on will plaster the loose retaining wall and stones of the patio.

Fingers crossed, will see how I get along

HI -- That is a big yard . Section off for your needs . Plan a patio and entertainment area close to the house . Then an area for the kids and then an area for a garden if needed and so on . Maybe build a little garden /summer house that has a fireplace or is screened in . Then the left over area you could just have it as a natural meadow with lots of trees where you don't need to mow grass -- the dog would love that . Add lighting too. Use some Eco grass ( no mow ) and lots of perennials and trees . Make a grove of trees like aspens or birches . Because of the size of your property , you should consult with a landscape designer .

Hi lots of different options and ideas going on. I had a similar wall and understand how mean it can be to little ones. I bought and put up the expanding wood trellis. This instantly covered the area at a very reasonable price. I then planted quick growing climbing plants. I'm not a great gardener so I cant remember what i had but ask at the garden centre they will advise you. But at least you have a barrier in place to minimize accidents.

It might be an idea to get a local arboriculturist to assess the trees before planting anything. If they've not been looked at for a while there may be some thinning, branch removal, felling to be done. They will also advise if any have disease. Then see what you have left. Some thinning can increase light levels and moisture enabling you to plant more varieties of plants and create character areas in the garden. Shade areas with ferns or sunny glades. Japanese azaleas work well on the fringe. Swathes of cyclamen look beautiful. Generally, large swathes of the same plant looks more natural, as it gives the appearance the plant has colonised naturally. I may be a bit late to comment as you may be halfway through the garden! I think gravel is an easy and cheap way to create footpaths. A gravel garden can look amazing and gives a lovely country look. Levelling and compacting the area is good. I’ve always read that you should lay a weed suppressing membrane between the soil and gravel, but Charlie Dimmock said it doesn’t stop weeds and can look unsightly if it protrudes above the gravel over time. I agree with her and considering most weeds are airborne (think dandelions) they’ll still bed into the gravel. Quite easy to pull up though. You can always plant some flowers within or around it if you wish. Hope you get on okay Mel.
