Design Dilemma Paint Bedrooms

Farrow & Ball dilemma - main bedroom

Hi there,

We just moved into a new house and we cant seem to make a decision re: which colour to paint the main bedroom walls.

It's a large, bright south facng room so the main consideration is our dark green velvet headboard (pic1) which could clash with certain shades if we're not careful. Aside from the bed, the only other furniture we have on order is tall white pannelled wardrobes (pic2) which we intend to fit with small round brass handles. We plan to keep the existing carpet which is a thick grey.

We've been looking through Farrow & Ball samples and were thinking something neutral like Skimming Stone or School House White ?

Any tips / suggestions greatfully received.

Whatever you choose colour wise take a paint sample down to your local trade paint centre ask them to match colour. It'll be 1/4 of the price & better paint too than F&B

I wouldn't worry too much about the green clashing with lots of colours - green is one of the most common colours in nature and is mixed with all of the colours of flowers outside. So it's actually one of the easiest colours to work with as it looks good with everything, since we are used to seeing green with lots of different colours.

Adding width BEHIND THE BED - with a headboard (which doesn't have to be a "headboard"; it could be fabric, collection of mirrors, collection of pictures, a farm gate!, small chairs or stools) across the entire width. Matching bedside tables/bookcases/chests/ with LAMPS - useful storage for extra books, extra bedding, etc. CURTAINS always warm up a room. People will always feel colder away from home - provide an extra blanket or duvet to add to the bed. I notice there is no WARDROBE. Not really necessary for overnight guests (provide hooks on the back of the door) but useful for storing your out-of-season coats, etc. There is plenty of room behind the door. Buy one on eBay and paint it to suit your colour scheme.

Paint the doors black matt and the fames cream add silver crome door furniture. Huge silver mirror above the covered radiator then add a runner of any colour you like and match it with the lamps and lighting. hey presto done.

Sarsheen, you've created a lovely classic kind of luxury Edwardian effect. Fab. I think that's when those moorish tiles came into vogue initially. To continue on the theme - you could try one of those nice (wood or chrome) towel stands, which can be moved around. (Like they have in London gentleman-club type bedrooms and country-house hotels.). If you got a wood one, you could echo this with a wood framed mirror, perhaps ? A big fern type plant that loves the damp would look glorious too!

Put together a board with as many samples as you can: fabric, A4 sample paint sheets and flooring if possible - otherwise put the board on the floor. Put them together and eliminate the paint sheets one by one until you arrive at the best combination. If it works on the board it will work in the room.

Lovely bed. If you like deep colours, you could go full on green botanical with forest green walls. If you keep the bedding white like the wardrobes it will not be too dark. Or a dusky pink which goes so well with green. Sage green is another good choice which goes well with all the pinks, lilacs and purples. As already said by CWD, Green is the colour of nature and it goes so well with most colours. Get some sample pots and paint them onto A4 card and attach them to the wall with blue tack at different places. Not altogether as that can be confusing. Skimming Stone is a lovely neutral which would definitely work.

A deep rich navy or deep grey would look amazing with the green (but especially a navy) if you want a feature wall. Something like an Off Black which is F&B and can look between a navy and dark grey (but get it mixed at Johnstones)
