Design Dilemma Living Rooms Lighting

Living room alcoves

I’ve wanted shelves in my alcoves but these lights are installed quite fair down. Wondered if you guys had any ideas! I did a rough sketch and maybe have the lights moved up and switched to picture lights.

Part of me does wonder if shelves might crowd the space but I really wanted to style with my vases/books/ornaments!

Intrigued to hear thoughts

Moving the lights would be easy enough for an electrician. Have you considered putting LED strips under each of the shelves as an alternative to wall lights? I think free floating shelves are a good option for displaying ornaments, they don’t reduce the space in the same way that built in units can.

You could easily move the lights, but I wonder if having shelves only on one side only (the left) would work? Otherwise where would tv go? I have non symmetrical alcoves in my living room and have tv and unit on one side and a bookcase on the other. Just a thought.

Put the tv in front of the rear windows. Put the 2 seater in the middle of the room facing tv near fireplace. Coffee table between tv and two seater. leave the 3 seater on the same wall but closer to pianos current position. Put piano in suggested position. As for the bay windows a nice small round table with two chairs. A place to sit and have a drink and listen to music and look out the window...adds intimacy.

Hi, We have bought a new house and can't decide on the layout of the sitting room and was looking for some help. There is an electric fireplace integrated into the middle of the center wall and two alcoves on either side. I don't want to mount the TV above the fireplace as it will be too high so am wondering what is the best room layout and TV position. There is also a bay window at the front. We are planning on getting an L shaped couch as well. I have included the floor plans below. Any advice would be a great help!

Hello, We are looking for some advice on how to finish this wall in our small living room. The chimney breast wall only comes out 13cm so our first idea of console tables won't work. We are therefore thinking of getting a built in unit that will be about 35cm high - to the socket which will extend the length of the 3 walls, this has been done in other houses in our estate. We are thinking of a nice wood veneer and painting it? Would we possibly paint the chimney breast wall the same colour or the two other walls and leave the middle one plain? All ideas and suggestions are greatly welcomed! thanks! First two pictures are our living room currently, and third picture is an idea of the unit.

I think a rectangular fire could look jammed in between the bookcases, unless you can find a short one... Maybe you could simplify the fireplace by changing the backing board for a pale colour (not beige) and changing the surround for a really streamlined boxy shape. You could keep the mirror above. You say there's a lot going on - if it's possible to rearrange the items in the recesses in the two bookcases so they are more symmetrical, eg have some books on both sides, some candles each side and so on, it would give a "calmer" look? Another thought - normally shelving either side on a fireplace is recessed in the alcoves whereas yours are in line with the fire surround. If you had a fake full height chimney breast built and brought the fireplace forward (would only need to be the depth of the shelving) it might make the shelves look less dominant

Shelves on one side can work depending on the room layout. Here’s an example from one of our rental properties that we were staging for photographs. Personally I think the symmetry of shelves in both sides looks better if it’s possible in the space.

I can imagine w shelves like the ones shown on the left along with the same on the other side however continue the shelves to go around the corner of the wider alcove to give a somewhat symmetrical look to the shelves albeit one lot having the continuous flow around for an added pizazz
