Period window design - keep or change?
We need to replace most of the windows at the front of our house due to rot, plus we're considering ultra thin double glazing. This part of the house is was built in the 1850s. Due to the current arch design, hardwood quotes are coming back very expensive. Some people are suggesting we replace with a simpler design, or even move to uPVC. I'm concerned with either of these options that we'll lose the character of the house. Does anyone have any suggestions for a compromise on the design? Or examples of period looking uPVC that could work? Or do you think we should just stick with the current design if we can? Thanks!

Comments (9)I think the design of the exterior has real 70s integrity. A bit of paint is all you need. Replace the garage doors with floor to ceiling windows matching the aesthetic the current windows already have. You should check out Cocontest.com for architecture work, or you could try and find an interior architect (there are degree courses in interior architecture these days) I've seen loads of one plan's posts and it would definitely be worth having a chat with them. Comments (2)If you are worried about the hallway being dark why not have a fully glazed door into the open plan area at this bottom of the stairs. Comments (0)Hi everyone, Love this page and how amazing ye all are to solve a design problem. We have an old cottage with extension. Cottage is the large room at front 4.5m x 6.3 and extension is everything beyond 6.3 x 7.5m. There will be 3 bedrooms and bathroom upstairs, 2 above original cottage. We have redone roofs and floors, exterior doors and windows over time, this is a lengthy project as the funds just aren't there to do it all in one go. My issue is the design, I am looking at it every day for almost 2 years and keep changing. There is a load bearing wall at the back between two rooms. Services really need to be at back as cottage is very thick stone walls and would be nightmare for these self builders. The original layout has kitchen in the middle and bedroom out back with bathroom. We need a bedroom downstairs as 3 upstairs and we need 4 as 5 of us, too big age gap between boys, 14 years. There is a cottage next door to the right hence lack of windows there. There is a steel beam, dotted line to make space bigger. Please help.
