How dark is too dark?

I really like dark, moody colours.

i have a large open plan living room , which is light and airy. i have a separate lounge, with a large fireplace, that I’m planning on using as a formal/winter lounge i would like to go dark and moody and have narrowed it down to two colours; fynbos by paint and apaer library, or rainy afternnon by benjsmin Moore i prefer the tone of the BM colour, but worry its just a little too dark

What do you think?.

Floor is oak, sofas are 1 tan chesterfield, 1 mustard velvet sofa

Just wanted to update to say we went dark with paint and paper library Fynbos

I assume the first picture is fynbos and the second is rainy afternoon? Of the two I prefer fynbos. Have you looked at Farrow & Ball De Nimes or Oval Room Blue? Both have a similar tone but not quite so dark. First pic is De Nimes, second is ORB.

The top colour on the photos is rainy afternoon, the bottom fynbos. Over the fireplace the left is rainy afternoon, the right fynbos.
I really don’t like the quality of farrow and ball so avoid it at all costs.

What I have always thought is, if you try to "match" an existing floor it looks like you tried and missed. When you go with something completely different, the result is yes, I wanted something different, and here it is. Especially if you lay it in a different direction. Does that make sense?

Brighten the dining with a chandelier over the table and a new rug in the right size. It should be 4' wider and longer than your table top to allow for chair scoot and sit space without the chairs falling off the rug. Change out your red for yellow to add a pop of brightness. Will the mirror above the piano fit on the wall left of it so the new chandelier can be doubled for more brightness?

I think both are too dark. If you like a F&B colour but not their paint (as in my case too) then Johnstones do a computer colour match and their paint is great. It’s what l’ve done for all my emulsion colours plus it’s far cheaper.

I like darker colours so encourage you to avoid safer choices….. you just have to lift darker colours with lighter elements so most likely this mean replacing the curtains with something pale and some pale cushions and a few pictures with a light background or mount.

I also really like Pompeian Ash from Little Greene.

As you like it dark and moody your preferred color works as long as you add additional lighting into your room with floorlamps, a proper ceiling light, and so on. You could add accent colors in art, pillows, ornaments, curtains.

When I first looked at the colours & the photo of the room I did suspect both options might be too dark. Well, I’ve eaten my words! The room looks amazing & the colour choice works really well.
