Victorian Bathroom fireplace / chimney help

Hi, we have a slanted wall in our bathroom where we assumed a firee had been boarded up however after getting up in the loft we could see there was a triangular void and only a small rectangular chimney in the corner.

so weve opened it up and were assuming we could take out the brick walls apart from the actual chimney of course at the back as they are not load bearing

also does anyone know why the fireplace isnt even connected to the chimney?! we cant get our head around it.

I don’t know if this helps, but years ago I lived in a Victorian house and I think the ‘fireplace’ you are referring to was once called a copper. It was used for warming rather than a full blown fire, I know it doesn’t make sense today but I think the original build was to allow the smoke to permeate the cavity therefore making the house warmer. That’s why when you remove the brickwork it is soot city. I also see from your plans the kitchen is directly under the bathroom which is where the copper would have been situated cornerwise. I think you might find that the original fireplace/copper was in the corner of your kitchen. Good luck.

I'm pretty sure they will have been put in to provide a non-combustable zone behind and around the stove. We are about to install a wood burning stove and the installation instructions specify an area that needs to be heat resistant. Removing or even painting them behind the stove would be difficult and potentially dangerous. I would either paint the rest of the chimney breast a dark green to reduce the impact of the tiles, or add a fire surround (checking with the manufacturer or a reputable installer about clearance) and some painted tongue and groove cladding over the chimney breast depending on your preferred style.

Hi, I love Victorian houses especially ones with original features. Is there also a fireplace in the lounge? I don't necessarily think you need exactly the same on both rooms. I this if the flooring is the same then you can create two different moods. Like you say if one get more light and has a large bay window then you will automatically get a very different feel. I would say that out of the colours you mentioned I would be more inclined to go with the grey tones in the front room. These would tie in tonally with the navy in the dining room. I would also follow the same theme with woodwork and mouldings etc. Perhaps you could be brave and introduce a bright accent colour in the front room like a lovely bright yellow/mustard colour. This would add the warmth and work with the brighter aspect. You could include it on larger spaces such as a rug, cushions and blinds etc Hope this helps. Good luck with your move!

Hello Houzz Ireland, We are currently renovating a 1960's build - so as you know, there is a lot of decisions to be made!! So it would be nice to get some gems of advice from the experts to help us through this daunting task. Areas where we would really like some inspiration for - small bathroom downstairs. I would really like to do something fun with this room and although small, I think it could work really well with some funky wallpaper or possibly tiles?! I'm just not sure what to do with it. Also - pulling a whole house together?! Where do we start? We have the bigger pieces of furniture but how do I know what nest of tables goes best with a suite? Or what accessories will bring a room together? I'm due a second baby in 2 weeks time so any help at this stage would be so amazing - to guide me on the right interior design path for our new house.
