I bought this stag dressing table from a charity shop and I absolutely love it, however the wood is bit too dark/warm for the colour scheme of my bedroom.
I’m torn between painting it a beige/stone colour or whether to sand it back and try and lighten the wood. Any ideas??
Very nice. I think dark furniture can look amazing, but if you prefer something lighter then painting is an option. I painted some furniture in Little Greene eggshell paint, by giving it a light sand, then 2 coats of primer and then 2 coats of eggshell. One piece has chipped a bit (damn hoover!) but still looks okay. I used Slaked Lime 105 on one and Slaked Lime mid on the other. I used water based eggshell as oil based gives me a terrible headache, but oil is more hardwearing. There are specific paints for furniture so worth a search, but I personally do not like Annie Sloan paints which give a very scruffy finish in my view! I’ve never tried to lighten wood so not sure how that’s done.
Before you paint it you might be surprised at how well a very light sand and some danish oil brings it to life. I have a mid century dresser I renovated and it really doesn't overwhelm my small bedroom. Any sanding needs to be really gentle as some surfaces may be vaneer.
