Reassuring advice

Opening up an old fireplace where im currently living.

as you can see at the bottom it wasnt completely sealed up. ive had the chimney swept and everything is fine.

question is, are those arched bricks solid enough or do i need a lintel?

    Best to get a structural engineer or a surveyor round to check it for you. No professional in their right mind is going to say - yes mate looks fine to me in a public forum based on one photo!
