I'd estimate with Scaffolding included to render the front around garage & side will cost around £4.5k obviously depending where you are in the country

Personally I think mismatched semis are worth less- only consider rendering this house if you can persuade the neighbours to do it too.

Hi, Moving into a new house which is currently painted white with white PVC windows. We're planning on replacing the windows with Aluclad windows and I was looking for suggestions on colour combinations. Initially, I was thinking that I'd repaint the house white and go with Anthracite Grey frames. However I'm a little worried that it's very fashionable at the minute and might date in the next couple of years. I've also seen a few houses lately with lighter coloured windows which looked good. One had a grey with what looks to be almost an olive undertone with the walls painted a deep creamy shade. I'd be really interested to hear what colour combinations other people have gone for and whether I risk dating the house as '2016' with a white/dark grey/anthracite combination. I'll post photos later of the house as it is currently and a mock up of the house with dark grey windows. Thanks a million!!

In a former life, our house was a shop on the ground floor. The red brick front was taken out to allow for the shop window and door. When the property was turned back into a house, the opening for the shop window/door was filled in with blocks and rendered. As much as we’d love to, we don’t have the budget to try restore it to its original red brick with oblong sash window so we’re looking for some ideas on how best to smarten up the look of the house front and give it s bit of curb appeal. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Number one rule: It is YOUR house. Do as you wish. I am confused by gray stone, high/white walls/skylights, and terra cotta brick all in the same space. That said, I think the stone already in place seems to suggest decor focused on that massive design element alone. The stone wall reminds me of a of "warm, cozy" space made by a masonry heater. http://heatkit.com/html/gallery.htm I like your idea for teal cabinets. Would swapping the brick wall treatment for textured drywall painted with a "warm" color that compliments the teal give you at least some of the cozy feeling you want?

Ahhh I love the colour of the brick. Would you consider keeping but painting the white instead? Will be cheaper, easier to change in future if you change your mind too. Plus won't look odd next to neighbour.

I always think render requires upkeep - needs repainting every 5+ years. I’d stick with brick

I would say that’s quite a nice red brick. Problem with render is it can soon looks tatty and needs re-painting. I wouldn’t paint the brick, it will just look cheap, in my opinion. Some councils are very strict about changing a house’s frontage so best to check.

I think the brick is fine. What about changing the white board under the window and your garage doors - I think that would make a bigger impact and would be more in keeping. Agree with the comments about mid matches semi’s.

Regarding mismatched semis I would never buy one- I think they look unbalanced….. but it’s more about having a mismatched streetscape. If you live in an area of house all built at the same time with the same aesthetic then one major change stands out, and this effect is exaggerated when the house is attached to others. Furthermore when one person personalized their house it green lights others to also do what ever they want…. Before long the streetscape isn’t very cohesive which also down values property prices.

In 2005 Sarah Beeny did a programme called Streets ahead where they spent money undoing all the mismatched changes to a street and creating a cohesive look- at the end they demonstrated an increase in house prices.

Jonathan, so basically what your saying is you prefer all the houses on a street to look the same? Like the majority of new builds. As long as people are maintaining the houses and updating them (within reason) what's wrong with houses looking differently? 8 years ago I bought the house directly opposite (semi) my house & put a double side extension.

& Wraparound to the rear gutted it started again. Looked totally different to anything on the street. That in turn raised the price of houses in the street totally smashed so called ceiling price of street too when I sold it. Think we had 7 or 8 offers £15/£20k over asking price. That wasn't very cohesive but we done ok

I have to agree with Ricky, I love mismatched streets! Houses all looking the same is so much more boring! Nothing cuter than terraced houses in different pastels is there?

So both Ricky and Nadine have inadvertently made my point. Nadine’s picture shows a street where different colours represents a cohesive look because the sprit is the same- this street wouldn’t look quaint if one owner had decided to built very modern with plain windows. And Ricky referenced new house builders who know how to profitably sell houses and he also referred to his own project which no doubt had to set the double side extension back from the front of the original house in order to preserve some of the original proportions of the house. Might I also suggest that you sold well because you significantly increased the square footage.

no we didn't step it back. New builds materials are bought in bulk so that does help profitability wise. Also yes we increased square footage obviously but it's because we did something totally different to what was on the street that it had so much interest.

Ricky- I guess we will never know if it would have sold for more had it been sympathetic to the rest of the streetscape.

I like the look of the brick and the uniformity of the houses. Render can start to look dirty after awhile, even the k rend type. You can probably get specialist companies to come in and clean it, but that’s still extra maintenance.

Don’t forget that there are some instances where you may need planning permission to render your home, such as if:

• You live in a conservation area (such as a National Park)
• Your property is listed
• You use materials that don’t match the construction of your home
• You’ve had your permitted development rights removed
