Design Dilemma Renovating Kitchens

Kitchen Extension

We are looking to extend the dining room out to the end of the kitchen. Has anyone got any ideas of what we could do in terms of layout? I don’t really want to change the bathroom in any way due to keeping costs down. I’m worried if we knock down the side kitchen wall and have everything open it’s going to look odd. Many thanks

The best starting point is to look at what your neighbours have done with similarly proportioned houses. There are two ways to do this:
1- go on a property portal and search for local houses that have already had kitchen/side return extensions
2- search your planning portal for planning permissions in your local area

Both of these will give you floor plans and get your imagination going. Good luck

I'd think about keeping the current kitchen and using it as a utility room and pantry. Extend out into the garden space behind the dining room to make a new kitchen that is fully open to the dining room, but with doorway/s into the new utility/pantry. I'd keep dining table in the current dining room as a walk-thru dining space and then have a kitchen along the right hand wall of new space with an island opposite.

Just a quick suggestion, if the plumbing works place the WC under the staircase. And place the door so it does not open towards the living or kitchen areas. Please also post some photos of the house as it looks from the outside.

Hello Houzz Ireland, We are currently renovating a 1960's build - so as you know, there is a lot of decisions to be made!! So it would be nice to get some gems of advice from the experts to help us through this daunting task. Areas where we would really like some inspiration for - small bathroom downstairs. I would really like to do something fun with this room and although small, I think it could work really well with some funky wallpaper or possibly tiles?! I'm just not sure what to do with it. Also - pulling a whole house together?! Where do we start? We have the bigger pieces of furniture but how do I know what nest of tables goes best with a suite? Or what accessories will bring a room together? I'm due a second baby in 2 weeks time so any help at this stage would be so amazing - to guide me on the right interior design path for our new house. Hi, advice gratefully received. Love our new house, but the ground floor layout is not great. Long narrow kitchen facing east, garden is big so scope to extend. As it stands you come in from the hall into the lounge to get to the kitchen. I would like to have some separation so that the lounge can be closed when desired. Perhaps some double doors? I was thinking to use a chunk of the lounge and knock through into the kitchen which would also allow more light. Lounge is lovely and light, kitchen is dark after lunch. Ideal solution would be a side extension, but drains and pipes in the way so worried about the cost.. Would only require about a metre wide along the actual kitchen which I would then face towards the garden and create a sitting area. Any ideas welcome P.S. Conservatory is a junk room at the moment, facing a fence on the right hand side. The garage is used as a utility.

Hi Emily,

I think you would struggle to create a good layout without opening up the wall from the kitchen into the extension. You might not need to open it up fully but at least enough to have a wide walkway between the rooms. So I have shown a design which I think would make the most of the space, but would require considerable structural changes. You could scale back some of these changes in order to suit your budget and the layout would still work fine.

The extension allows for a larger kitchen with an island/peninsular as well as a small living area in the space too. The dining room remains in the same place but i would suggest moving the door to the lounge into the hall if your budget allows. I have shown a reduction in size of the shower room in order to get a utility space and a side door. But you could leave this out to reduce the budget as well.

Please let me know what you think? I could create a simpler version of this layout with less changes to the structural walls as well. And I wish you all the best with your extension project!
