Living room help with colours.

Hi need help with choosing colours for walls door frame and skirting,also what to do with fireplace,currently changing dark doors to white but not sure weather to paint surround of doors and bottom skirting in stone colour top sk8rtings will be white same as ceiling would like some duck egg blue but it's really what colour to put on what walls and should door frame and bottom skirting be different colour and what colour should fireplace be and should window sills be white any help much appreciated.

I personally would paint all the woodwork white or off white including the fireplace surround. A mishmash of colours will look disjointed. As to wall colour a very pale duck egg could work. Dulux Ocean Ripple is a lovely pale hue. If you want a more definite blue, then F&B Oval Room Blue is lovely but quite dark. One thing I would do is take the tie backs off the curtains, open the curtains right back, and let them hang straight down. Tie backs are quite old fashioned.

Pale grey wood work may work. The curtains also need to be open more to let light in.

Is the chandelier thing seeming a bit small for the room or is it just me? Given that your walls are plain, the sofa is plain how about a patterned rug? Do you like Persian rugs? I find that dark green wainscotting too heavy and would paint it a lighter color. Given you have just moved in I assume you are planning to be there a while. If you like traditional style do you want a fairly safe color scheme re walls and curtains, keeping future resale in mind. Or are u happy to decorate according to your tastes? The mirror seems a bit small to me.

I must admit the cashew looks pretty white on an iPad! I would maybe try a grey with a hint of mauve (you know the colour that they quite often use for french chairs etc). I've looked at the following from zoffany: fig grey, dusk and victorian purple. They may be too much purple so you could buy a grey and mix your own with a mauve tester pot

Thanks, I wasn't sure where the 9'4 measurement came in. If you're buying all new furniture then look for items on legs, as you can see the floor beneath it will make the space feel bigger. You can also use glass ie a glass coffee table or Louis ghost chairs for example. I'd also go for a large mirror over the hearth or not knowing your style could also have a ŵall of glass tiles for the same effect which will also bounce light. I'd go for a pale tone sofa and use warmer/darker colours for cushions if wanted. If you want a rug then I'd keep it in the same tone as the floor else to visually maximise floor space. I've drawn a very rough plan (not entirely to scale and obviously not knowing where doors etc are!). I assume you're wanting to buy furniture before you move in? If so do you have a similar size room where you could cut out paper templates of all furniture to see if the space works? I would mount the tv on the ŵall if you have one. Hanging it over a slim console (or slim cabinet for storage) means you can add art on the ŵall and accessorise the console so the tv doesn't become the feature of the ŵall. You could go for a coffee table or a small footstool which can double up as extra seating and table. I'd go for a round dining table, 3ft will seat 4 and you can pull it away from the corner when entertaining. i'd go for a 2 seater sofa (c5f?) but try and get a slim one. I don't know the size of the windows but blinds, shutters may also be an idea so curtains don't encroach on the floor space? In terms of decor do you want light and neutral or dark and moody then people can suggest paint colours?

Our living room is a cosy size, about 15x15. It has a large window on one wall, fireplace on the opposite (will be a cream cast iron traditional style fireplace). I was thinking of painting it a very mellow sage green but am at a loss with what curtains to put in.

If you are unsure maybe do it in stages. Start by priming back to white the coving, door frame and skirting. Then consider the window board. Is it a quality hardwood which is much harder waring than paint? Lastly the fire surround, consider its quality. Doing it this way will give you more of a blank canvas and maybe help you avoid a mistake that is harder to rectify.

Hi Angela Robertson, painting the woodwork an off-white will make the room feel lighter. We would also recommending painting the fireplace surround too for a cohesive look.
