Living Rooms Furniture Design Dilemma

living room help

last year

Hi all, just moved into a new house and struggling to decide how to layout my living room. It’s quite a large space and I’m finding that half of it feels wasted and empty at the moment. Pls note the fireplace is not in the middle of the left wall, it’s actually offset and further to the left - about 2.5 meters from the window

Edited to add that this is just for our living room, so dining table is in the kitchen

You could set the furniture to have 2 distinct spaces, a tv space and a 'reading' or non tv space. Lamps will help define the spaces.

I think there are too many doors so it ends up being a corridor. Suggest you retain the doors near the front door and close off the others. Suggest you do a built-in around the fireplace extended to centre the overall unit on the wall (maybe with a wood store to the right) act as a focal point and rebalance the room.

From the looks of things, that really is the only place for the sectional. So...can you pull it out just a foot maybe away from the window? Move your tv over the stove if safe to do and try a big plant in that corner where the tv is now. Your painting behind some is way too big for that wall. Move to opposite wall. I would remove the black loves eat and replace with two reading chairs and maybe that end table you have by the sofa. For window treatments I just do not see drapes/curtains working in this room with that sectional.

Thanks, I wasn't sure where the 9'4 measurement came in. If you're buying all new furniture then look for items on legs, as you can see the floor beneath it will make the space feel bigger. You can also use glass ie a glass coffee table or Louis ghost chairs for example. I'd also go for a large mirror over the hearth or not knowing your style could also have a ŵall of glass tiles for the same effect which will also bounce light. I'd go for a pale tone sofa and use warmer/darker colours for cushions if wanted. If you want a rug then I'd keep it in the same tone as the floor else to visually maximise floor space. I've drawn a very rough plan (not entirely to scale and obviously not knowing where doors etc are!). I assume you're wanting to buy furniture before you move in? If so do you have a similar size room where you could cut out paper templates of all furniture to see if the space works? I would mount the tv on the ŵall if you have one. Hanging it over a slim console (or slim cabinet for storage) means you can add art on the ŵall and accessorise the console so the tv doesn't become the feature of the ŵall. You could go for a coffee table or a small footstool which can double up as extra seating and table. I'd go for a round dining table, 3ft will seat 4 and you can pull it away from the corner when entertaining. i'd go for a 2 seater sofa (c5f?) but try and get a slim one. I don't know the size of the windows but blinds, shutters may also be an idea so curtains don't encroach on the floor space? In terms of decor do you want light and neutral or dark and moody then people can suggest paint colours?

New living room opened up.. And I am completely lost with decorating.. Painting colours really everything I get overwhelmed when I try make a start.. We have moved into it but consists of 3seater brown leather couch and double seater and single seater none matching.. We have carpet on the floor until pipes are ran under floor for radiators eventually it will be wood or laminate flooring.. Huge mat there.. Curtains that I am sick of.. No photos on wall as unsure about sizes and colours of photo frames and positioning.. It's a very big room high ceilings.. Red brick fireplace.. Need loads of advise to have a nice relaxing homely feel.. Family 5kids 2adults

It’s genuinely hard to say without seeing the space & understanding how you might use it, but the generic answer would be to fill the space with a rug and then create a seating area around a centre point. I’d also place large objects in the room corners - like an oversized plant in one for example. Other option, as Kazzh has suggested, is you break the room up - perhaps create a built-in window seat. Just remember to make everything you dress the room with proportion with the size of it

Also, I personally think keep the double doors - adds a feeling of grandeur. You could then put floor runners in front of either doorway & create a nicely sections living space within the boundaries they create
