Mismatched wood tones in kitchen

Hi, I've bought a house in Portugal in the process of renovation. I've not had much input into the kitchen at all except I chose the lighter flooring. What I didn't know is that the counter would be this warmer wooden tone 🤣 the walnut cabinet was the originally planned shade, but now I'm just confused. Does anyone have ideas about the tones? Will it work when I get furniture and plants in? I'm thinking to maybe get peel and stick white finishing to hide the walnut and open to somehow treating the counter to make it a "cooler" tone to match the floor? Thoughts? I don't currently love it 😬😬😬

If you have some elements of this warmer wood tone in the furniture it will look well appointed.

I would white out the walnut, that is paint it with Satinwood or eggshell paint and use a roller for a smoother finish. Use a white closest to the units although you could use any colour that will tie in with your chosen decor.

Agree about the white door ...along with the floor ... Not sure .....if you are changing the lampshade .....light fitting ..... Simply ...things Like just changing cabinet handles ... changes a look .... Love the backslash ...yes really !!!! You.... (as already said ) Could just change the worktops ... I would not choose a granite-Silestone unless I could see the stone with the cabinets. Bring home stone samples or if that is not allowed, take a kitchen cabinet drawer with you to make sure the stone color is a good choice. It is always best to block the sun before it hits the glass, if possible. See photo.

Hi minnie101, Thanks so much for your detailed reply. Great to know what colour that grey is. It may be a little dark with our floor. We will definitely update the handles - I hate the current ones. We'll probably go with wood to keep within budget. Your non-tiles pic is lovely. We'll probably keep some tiles and try to keep the kitchen a little more modern than country kitchen, which might be a challenge with wood. The room faces south. I like your idea of dividing it with paint. We probably will go with white in the kitchen and then 1/2 slightly darker tones in the tv-couch area. The 'other' entrance into the dining area is narrowed by a non-structural wall, so we should remove this to open it properly or like you say, close it off. Maybe not close it off entirely as we'd lose a lot of light, but maybe put in a counter or breakfast bar if space allowed. I love your pendant light suggestions over the dining table. Details like this and a rug in the couch area will really help divide the room as at the moment it is one big cavernous space. I really can't decide yet what way the couches should face - into a tv in the corner, or out into the room like you suggest. We'll have to draw out some chalk outlines on the floor and see how much space there actually is. Colour-wise we like the idea of keeping walls and cabinets quite stark, the wood counter will add a bit of warmth, and then adding colour with couches, rugs and possibly dining chairs. I've attached a couple of pieces of furniture I like. Some may not work, but we'll figure it out.

My kitchen was very similar to yours Theresa very dark - needed to leave lights all the time! I got the cabinets professionally painted in an off white by Farrow and ball and the walls are in Bone by farrow and ball which is a kind of grey - sage color. looks and feels way warmer and brighter! Think this could work really well with your wall tiles as they appear to have a green tone in them. Definitely integrate appliance - so glad I got mine painted it feels like a whole new kitchen without the big investment! Best of luck with yours!

You can also get it vinyl wrapped if you prefer, as it’s an area that won’t get heavy use.

Thanks, yes I definitely think I'll white out the walnut! Is there a wash of any kind I could use on the warmer wood kitchen counter?

I don’t think any kind of wood wash would be hardwearing enough for a worktop. I use Osmo for my oak worktop. Maybe see if they do a lighter finish?

The cabinetry doesn’t look like a painted finish, so I think if you try to paint the waterfall drop a matching white it will always look wrong. I would try to source a panel from the cabinet manufacturer if you want a matching look.
