What would you do?? Carpet/Flooring/Plumbing

Hi Houz community,

I wanted to get your advice on what you would do in our situation. We recently moved into an old 1930s house, it has carpet from the stairs into every room upstairs which has been down for 40 years.

I have had the professionally cleaned, shake and vac etc but nothing gets the smell out, they are 40years old in fairness.

Whilst I want to press ahead and get the rooms either re carpeted or floor boarded, I am also mindful that we may need to have the house plumbing upgraded in the upcoming year or so.

Do you have any advice on how you would handle this situation? I know the ideal option A would be to just live with it until we know about the plumbing, but I would ideally like to explore options B,C etc

Keep to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation and has any ideas or quick fixes.

Our current house was the same. We bought all of our engineered flooring in one go and fitted it upstairs room by room, replacing old radiators as we went along. I would live with it and do room by room, starting with priority (we did our kid's room first and the office). The stair carpet came out last and it was a happy day when that went in the skip. I can't see the point in a quick fix if it means further disruption later on. Also, be aware, when you remove old carpets the dust underneath is awful, ours, the rubber underlay disintegrated so it made a horrendous mess. Underneath was plywood which we laid the new flooring onto. Alternatively you could lay very cheap carpet that you won't keep but it seems an expensive option.

Horrid though it is to live with smelly carpets, you are better to wait and replace when the work is done.

I've had a look at free offerings for floor planning software. It depends on the level you want to go to. Sweethome3D http://www.sweethome3d.com/ is truly free because it's open source (no fees if you want to draw more than one plan etc). I've found I can get reasonably detailed with it from layout perspective but I doubt it would be good enough for a drawings for a building permit (although I'm not certain of this). As a graphic designer you'll have an affinity for graphics software. If you want to be able to draw more detailed drawings Id take the time to learn Sketchup. I know some architects use this as their software of choice. I'm definitely with you @Jason Carter - the only way to really control your budget is to plan ahead and choose and price everything that you can think of before you break ground. Otherwise you're in a situation where you have to make quick compromises during the build which leads to mistakes etc. In my work we use requirements tracking tools. I think it would be really helpful to communicate to the contractors exactly what is going to go on in the room - why the extra outlets are there and in the position they're in. That way they have a deeper understanding of why the specs are the way they are and they don't make decisions that detract from the design - they might even come up with suggestions that support the ideas behind the designs.

If you have a Lowe's nearby, take a look at the Pergo Driftwood Pine Laminate Flooring (top photos.) Even though it has a rustic, beach house feel, I love the color. It's a silvery/white/taupe (for lack of a better description) and that would be striking with your wall color, white bedding and black/brown bed. My other suggestion would be Brazilian Teak, (bottom photos) which is beautiful. It really depends on what makes you feel good and what you love living in! Christi for ThosBaker

Sorry, I'm confused. You have a landing that is attached, some how, to laminate flooring somewhere. Stairs will be carpeted...but not sure how stairs tie in to the laminate. Totally lost. You have stairs that will have carpet. They are attached to the landing...that is some how attached to flooring with laminate. There might be stairs involved, there might not be. At this point, without photos or blue prints or a full, clear statement describing the whole thing, we won't be able to help. What is the flooring 'upstairs'? Putting carpet on stairs, willy-nilly, with NO connection to "other areas of carpet" is quite odd. Many people who use carpet will often "carpet the stairs" and then carpet all of the area "upstairs" to match the stairs. This is why they put carpet on the stairs in the first place...it matches the "upstairs". Using carpets on stairs, then on a landing use laminate, and then continue carpet on stairs once again is very, very odd. Ending the carpet without continuing with it (ie. upstairs is another flooring type entirely) is another "odd thing to do". In essence, we will need more precise description of what is going on here.

I think you will need a carpet runner in the hallway to reduce noise from either wood or tile. I would definitely use tile in the kitchen and bathroom, for ease of cleaning. Wearing rubber soled shoes instead of high-heeled shoes or boots indoors will also keep the noise level down.

I think I'd be tempted to pull up carpet in one room, sort out nails and all the mess that will be left behind, clean up the boards and see how good/bad they are (assuming there are floorboard under there). If good enough to live with unfinished, throw a rug down and then wait til the work is done. If really bad then maybe get as big a rug as you can fit to hide as much as possible (get an offcut of carpet and get the edges bound perhaps) - might be cheaper than having a carpet fitted and definitely easier to remove for the plumbing work and you might be able to re-use after too.

Pulling up very old carpet can be a smelly, messy job, but I think that is what I would do. Then live with whatever floor is left until you can complete all the work. As CWD suggests, rugs can hide any tatty floors until you can carpet. If you go for polypropylene rugs, they are pretty cheap to buy and can easily be cleaned. I have the Parker rug.
